Recently started losing charge,so replaced voltage regulator-still no charge.Repaced alternator, now keeps blowing fusible link.Have replaced link with buss type 30 amp.Everytime I reconnect the neg cable it sparks.Any help would be appreciated!

I fried a fusible link one time when my alternator failed. You haven't had this overcurrent problem until you changed the alternator. I would take that one back and exchange it or have it tested. Get your hands on a wiring diagram and look at the circuit from the alternator through the fusible link.

Have the schematic but don’t understand why I get spark when connecting neg cable to battery

Spark when connecting the neg cable means something is drawing current. I would be looking for a dead short somewhere.

quick and easy way to eliminate or at least isolate the alternator from the equation is to simply totally disconnect it. If the fuse blowing stops you can pretty much bet the alternator is the cause.

Ok will start tracing wires and disconnect alt.Can I bypass amp gauge and connect two wires?

Agree with GR if neg connection doesn't spark alt is the problem. Unless have something that runs all the time like a clock.

Should I have voltage at starter solenoid with neg cable disconnected?

I'm no electrical guy but couldn't you connect a test light between the battery and the cable and start disconnecting things until the light went out?

With the neg cable disconnected from the battery you should have no juice anywhere.

Yes, and that could be your problem. If the insulation in the gauge has gone bad, you'll fry the fusible link. I tried to fix mine, but it didn't work and when I connected the wires, the link smoked itself. I bypassed the gauge and no more problems.

take one leg off the gauge and put it on the other post with the other leg.

bypassed

I picked up a spare dash for the speedo,so I have an extra amp gauge.Any way to check it to see if it’s good?

What alternator and voltage regulator did you replace it with?
1 wire or 2 wire alternator?
Round back or square back?

I am kind of involved with this. At first the alt was a two wire nothing out. We hooked up the neg cable after putting a temp fuse holder in waiting on the fusable link, blew the fuse right away (30 amp) With the fuse blown and the neg cable off we were getting 12 VDC at the starter relay, weird as hell. Took the plug off the msd unit it went away, ok back feeding Voltage. The voltage for the MSD comes right off the battery also and is key switched on through the unit. Put a new fuse in and ran it till it blew again, just a few seconds. the alt gauge was on the dscharge. OK I am thinking something is shorted/drawing a load on the other side of the alt gauge. Just a weird on since everything was good before the alt change. I will be over there in the AM any ideas? I am going to look for a short after the alt gauge. Now the alt is a one field round back. Any ideas?

Won’t be around till afternoon, wife is having a procedure in the morning
