Must be a rare pump housing off a Hemi 6 pak, lol!!

Not sure how complete this list is but I found this information over at 440Source regarding water pump housings.

Casting -----Production Years
1944916---------59-63
2205862---------62-64
2468007---------65-66
2780987---------67-71
3698468---------73-up

From what I've been told a couple times now is that the Pentastar housings began appearing in later production 1969 cars. So, could it be that the housing in question here, 5XZZ, was manufactured somewhere between 1967 to early 1969?

Thanks for doing that Mike. What does the thermostat gasket surface look like? Sure wish 5XZZ made some sort of sense to me?

Gasket surface is good. Would you like a photo?
Mike

We are comparing two types of vendors here....maybe 3.....

The part number was only used between those listed years......so the date format can be reversed.......

Anthony as I stated if you are hunting for the correct pump, then find the right one with a correct date fomat. Don't pick something that's raises questions.....

I have waited years to find the correct dates parts....that's the hunt and the difficulty of building a correct car.....

People don't have a flipping clue what it takes build a correct car.....but they sure like to make smart azz comments....

The pump you need to find is one with the pentstar on it....remember I found one close with an Oct date..

Take your time you will find it

Day code: F1X2 ?? Another curve ball. All the other pics I've seen of housings with the Pentastar have a four digit month/day/year by the Pentastar.
The F1X2 is another vendor variation.....That is 1st month 2nd day.......So you could say any year form 67-71....but the 1st month 2nd will not fit your build date...

Some have a full date format as 04079.....April 4th of 1969...

I have seen some with a code reference 5768 which is a "zero" date........67-71 and would work but only an experienced judge will know..,,

I have also seen some with no date, hence that stamp is not existent.....Again an experienced judge will know but you know what people will question.....

I have also seen them dated on the lower tube....

Again, Chrysler used multi vendors and they followed their own format on dating and this is why their are variations....

Furthermore, the premo restorers will hunt forever for a housing with a verifiable date format versus a "possible"......

Then if you find the right pump is it pitted and are the stampings easily readable.....Are thither any dents or dings from people banging on them etc....It is a challenge to find a pristine part and the correct date range.....A pitted ding bad stamping pump will not pass in a judged event...

The water pump housing I perceived to be original to my numbers matching engine has 9 3 on it.

My engine assembly date is 9/4/1968.

According to MMC Detroit -> LINK

Two digits can mean Month and Year, or Month and Day

Month and Day would make sense so then is there no way to tell the year?

Another possible clue is my temp sensor has M8 on it. That would seem to indicate December 1968? Could have been changed out? Who knows for sure?

If it helps narrow down the casting vs assembly date & time frame periods.....my ‘69, #s matching 383....block casting date is 12-4-68, was assembled 2-13-69, casting date of water pump housing 2-11....”2 days” prior to engine assembly.......the temp sensor is 1-69. Sounds like your original housing. Don’t know how bad the saw marks are, but I’ve had success with JB weld on small engine casting defects. Anyway I’m not an expert in any of this stuff, but hope the info helps....Jim

They randomly pulled housings from a bin.....so you got what was available and try did not check dates.....the closer the better to the assembly date is preferred....

Not sure if this is any help at all or confuses the issue farther. Here is a housing I took off of a 67 Chrysler 383 engine years ago. Not sure of the build date on that car but the date code on this housing is "2 X 8" I'm pretty sure it means Feb 8th and has to be 1967 since it was on a 67 model car, it can't be Feb 1968. It has the fratzoid and not the pentastar so could not be 69

That is 2nd month 8th day so February 8 and no year date....that was explained above in relation to that format

A appreciate everyone’s comments and opinions. This is a great forum with great people willing to offer help.

Anyway, I’ve decided I’m going to take the two following actions.

1) I will keep an eye out for the premo restorers pump housing with the clearly identified third quarter 1968 date code and in good shape.

2) At this point, I have little to loose in trying to repair what I perceive to be the original to the car housing.

I think both ways will be a win-win.

I have this one. Date 9X30 What ever that is?

It is an interesting code, looks like a Hemi Head Date format. Month F=May, Day 1, Year 72. If they were making them in 72 for the parts. Or that could be a Year Code F=70 and Jan 2.

I think that is a good approach. I have found heat is the best way to remove a stubborn tube after soaking in the penetrant. The taper threads really make it a pain to remove otherwise.
