70 Roadrunner Rear Bumper Installation Question?

Hi guys,

Just got my car back from paint. I bought the car in pieces after the PO had done all the metal work. Looking at the rear of the car, it looks like I will need to drill out holes in the slots near the bottom of this pic. Is that correct? There is a backing plate there that is pretty thick. Not sure if that was stock or not.

Thanks! Hoping to get the rear bumper on this weekend.

Those slots need to align with the slots in the end of the sub frame. If they don't, then you have work to do. My 67 has doubler plates, so I assume those are correct.

I have a 70 Roadrunner and am about to tackle this same issue. Yes, you need to drill out those holes. Yes, they should line up with the holes in the bumper bracket behind it (& bumper too for that matter). Yes, that "backing plate" is stock/original & is used to reinforce that area since your jack attaches to the bumper to change a flat tire...bumper area needs to be strong....unlike the plastic cover/styrofoam junk on newer cars.

Cool. Do I need to slot it out, or can I just drill in the middle of the slot? I imagine slotting metal that thick would take all night!

If everything lines up you will only need to drill the rear crossmember, which is not that thick. Just drill in the middle and see if the bumper lines up. If not then you can slot accordingly.

Ok I'm lost why would you drill holes out to mount bumper, wouldn't you use existing holes from factory?

Looks like that is a replacement piece of metal and it doesn't come with holes in it... just a guess I could be wrong though. Probably best that way, knowing the aftermarket if they sold the piece with the holes already in it they probably wouldn't line up right anyway LOL
