509 Camshaft issues

I've read these comments all sounds good but, instead of installing a different cam you could advance your cam 2° which will give you more low end to mid range tourqe. The 383 will respond better even with the 509.

Sounds like the installer may have advance your cam, recheck it most cam sprockets have it where you can install straight up 4° advance or 4° retarded

Put a ton of idle timing to it. You might have to lock out the distributor to get it to run even marginally well.

I have a 340 with one of those cams, timing is 36* no mechancial advance....

A few people, myself included, suspect my mystery purple stripe hydraulic cam is the 292°/.509.
My 440 sure pulls like it is. I'll never know for sure without checking it, but I'm not changing it anyway.
Went from 3.54s to 4.10s when the 5 speed was installed.
I have about 12 pounds of vacuum. Manual everything and a 5 speed manual.
This is idling around 975 RPM:

Agree with IQ on the previous page
back to basics
what's your compression ratio and cranking compression? did you say what heads
Forget the new converter- gear change etc etc wrong direction 4 U and loose the single plane- good call whoever said it
no mater what the compression that cam (and with that Victor) is a bracket racing cam - not for what you want to do- good combo for a race car
The Comp 268 measured at .006 is about the same as the Stock MOPAR 260 cam or DC 260 cam as far as duration is concerned
why put a chevy cam in your MOPAR? Summit cam (which one) same problem- want cheap get an ELGIN but how to pick?
no cam recommendations without compression
if low compression even the Comp XE274HL will be too big but may be ok with higher compression much more modern than the 284 MP cam (which also maybe too big in a low compression 383)

Do you see there near the bottom of this quote, "no cam recommendations without compression"? Please follow through with that suggestion!

All the comments here point to the wrong combo. I agree. However the original post is; "it falls on its face" Does this mean it stumbles/hesitation? Or is the complaint lack of power? If it's a stumble/he station it can be fixed.

I was in the same boat as you. I built my 400 with a 509 and a torker intake. After break in, I tried to tune it. Wasn't happening. I tried playing with timing, carb adjustments, even advancing the cam. The max vacuum I could get was 8". I pulled the cam before I even got it on the street and bought a RPM intake and a comp ex268. The engine and I are a lot happier. I'm glad I bit the bullet.

Same cam I run with an old Eddy TM7 Holley 3310 and hedders in a 440. Sounds nice with a mild lope good street manners and decent mileage with 323s. But I am looking for something a little more radical, maybe a step up in the Comp grind or another cam company. Any suggestions are welcome.

What kind of engine builder do you have ? He didn't ask you your intentions or research the parts he was putting in your car ? And now to compensate for a cam that isn't gonna work in your situation he wants to install a high rpm converter ? It sounds like you choose the 509 cam because it had a lot of popularity, everyone has heard of the "509"..Save your money and pull the cam and get one that'll work for your situation. And if your builder can't help with that recommendation then maybe that's something else you should change. IMO

Shannon - still around
did you ever post up your compression
IQ's method works best with 3.91s and spin it up- serious loss of torque 2500-3000 torque in a 440 would really die in a 383

I would not use a comp 268 anywhere there are many better choices
