Hi
I need to replace my water pump on my 451 (613hp, 625tq) with TFS240 heads because it's leaking from vent hole. It's a flow cooler that I put in about 20 years ago so I did get good service life. In the past 2 engines I had (440 cast iron 452 heads) and this one I did notice after long drives the coolant in overflow would be bubbling, burbling etc...and the temps were just past middle on the stock gauge, which made me feel uncomfortable. The rad is a 28# 3 core (79 Magnum) original with Shroud and clutch fan. I have 1 50/50 prestone and the rest is distilled water with 1 lucas super coolant. I have been doing some reading and there was alot of talk about "high flow" like the flow cooler being too quick and not allowing rad to do it's job. I've also seen recommendation of an A/C water pump??. Heard about difuser disc's as well. I don't really want to change the rad unless I have to and the only direct fit seems to be Griffin which is costly. Need help cooling engine down.
Thanks

Well, you’re trying to cool a lot. # of fan blades? Clutch good, not slipping? Radiator need cleaned out?

It's a 7 Blade clutch and it's in good shape the rad was flushed 2 summers ago.

I like the "Flowkooler" water pump. Put one on my 383, noticed an immediate difference.

My 2-cents....... as long as you're adding the Lucas Super Coolant, use less antifreeze + more distilled water...the more water the better for cooling. BUT, make sure you have enough antifreeze for the coldest day you ever see in your area in the dead of winter (wind chill doesn't count). If you live in a hot climate (e.g. Las Vegas) I would suggest no antifreeze at all...just water + Super Coolant.

Put in 1 50/50 rest is distilled water and a Lucas. Ran it about 40 miles to the track, raced the car and on the way back temps were ever so slowly creeping up to just past the middle. Got into the city and went down slightly. Perhaps those stock rads 3 1/2 inch cores arent enough?? The rad is a different one than those earlier 70's rads this is thinner and 28" and mounting holes are different. I wonder who might make an aluminum in this style?

Been awhile(shame on ya); I’m running a Mishimoto(?) from Summit 26”. If your’s is cooling down when in city traffic, I don’t think it’s rad. problem. Clutch fan not kicking in all the way(?).

Good point! Not cooling in traffic is usually a fan problem (or lack of a fan shroud)
