Hello, I need to swap my fuel tank and clean out the lines due to rust/gunk making it's way through the lines. While I am in the processes of getting that taken car of, I would like to be able to start my car every now and to keep the fluids moving and the car fresh. Is there a good way to start the car without the fuel tank? I would like it to still go through the fuel pump. Is it as simple as putting the line in the gas can? Would the fuel pump be able to suck up the gas? Does it need a special pick up? Is there a specific height the gas can should be at? Any thoughts on the idea are appreciated.

Thanks!

Pretty much unnecessary. In the cold climates car sit for 6-8 months every year with no ill effects. At least mine have. In fact short run times do more harm then good.

Frank Mopar is right, but to answer your question yes it is that simple. Just run a line from the inlet of the fuel pump into a can of fuel. Do everything you can to make sure it’s not going to tip over and no sparks or anything can get into it obviously.

Put a long hose on the fuel pump suction, and have the can on the ground a couple of feet away. Cut the hose end on an angle where it goes into the can.

How long do you anticipate this taking ? This is a job that only takes a few hours.

Thanks for the feedback. I have never replaced the gas tank before and need to get all the parts still. Seems nothing ever goes smoothly. Need to jack up the car, get underneath it, and figure it out. It also has the California Emissions Control ports and hoses on the side of it that I need to deal with. I need to take it all out, replace the sock filters, gaskets, etc.. and hook it all up and maybe replace with all new fuel lines as well...

Start it !?!?! Hell, I've ridden in cars that didn't have fuel tanks !!

Does the fuel pump provide enough suction to physically pull the gas up out of the portable tank container when the tank is on the ground? It will need to come straight up the hose instead of the hose coming from the bottom of tank...

Yes. Like others have said put the fuel can or auxiliary tank on the ground and the pump will suck the fuel up.

... I wish I had a picture of the 74 Monaco I drove with a fuel can ratchet strapped to the roof when the fuel pump died on me... Gravity feed from the 2' drop was a solid 1 psi. Kept the carb full.

Get a stainless steel tank, you'll be glad you did!

When I bought my car, it did not have a tank, the PO had a five gallon gas container connected to run it every so often.

What are you worried about? I drove around like this for a while.
