I have been running my newly built 440 for a few weeks now. Now that I have the odds and ends buttoned up I want to address a low power surging that I am experiencing.

At steady throttle, anywhere from 1200-2000ish rpm I feel a “surge”. I can’t tell if it is a power surge (forward) or a loss of power surge (backward). My hunch is it’s loss of power. I can’t feel this at high RPM or high acceleration. It is very evident power coasting downhill in 4th gear around 1300 rpm.

Additionally, when under mid power, heading up hill every once in a while the rpms will quickly dip and then come back up to where they were. However the surge does not happen under this scenario.

I have installed an air fuel gauge and determined that this is not a lean surge situation. At least it’s not showing that on my passenger bank. My air fuel at when this happenes is between 10.3-13. I am also going to be tuning up the carb so I don’t run so rich all the time.

Specs of the engine that I think matter to this:
New Holley 850 DP, has not been messed with other than setting the idle screws.
MSD Digital 6AL, which was successfully igniting my former small block.
MSD Blaster 2 coil, mounted to the intake. Also successful used on my former small block.
MSD Pro-billet distributor, new.
Mechanical fuel pump (pushes anywhere from 7-9 psi. I have a fuel regulator that I will be installing to even out the psi.)
New Accel plug wire set.
Lokar throttle linkage, (new)

Not sure what else I need to list out.
My magnetic pickup wire is shielded and runs from my MSD box mounted under the stock battery spot, straight over to the front driver side of the engine, up and over the water housing and runs along the 4 plug wires till it hits the distributor.

Any questions that might help solve this mystery?

I would check fuel supply and pressure
What kind of pump you running

I’m running 3/8 line from the sensing unit to the carb, however, my sending unit is 5/16 out.

I upgraded my sender to the 3/8
Pump is new doesn’t mean that somewhere in the line there’s a problem
Checking is knowing
At gm as mechanic the shop manual always said known good not new pump ect

Are you running a vacuum advance?
Might be a timing issue at that RPM

I had the same pump (maybe Summit re-sold the one i sent back lol) which went to zero psi under hard acceleration. Not your issue of surging but I did replace it. I would for sure tee in a fuel pressure gauge and see what it's doing to rule it out.

I have a gauge in there. It bounces around but hovers between 7 and 9 psi. Which I think is high for the carb?

no vac advance. Initial timing at 900 is 14. All in is 32.

The float sights show proper fuel levels at idle and hand reving.

Is there such thing as too much pressure?

  1. FUEL PRESSURE: This carburetor has been designed to work best at fuel pressures between 5 and 7 psi. Holley recommends 7 psi at idle, and a minimum 4 psi at engine redline. Three 8” fuel lines can result in adequate (indicated) fuel pressures, but restricted fuel flow. Use of a Holley electric fuel pump at the rear of the vehicle next to the fuel tank assures adequate fuel pressure under even the most severe operating conditions.
    Universal Double Pumper (650, 700, 750, and 800 CFM)
    this is Holley spec.

lock your distributor out set your total timing around 34-36 degrees install a MSD starter saver retard your starting timing 20 degrees you will be amazed.

Have you tried more initial??
During the dyno testing my engine liked 32 degrees total best. Produced the most power and ran the smoothest. On the MSD distributor I am using the black shin which gives me the least amount of timing add, 18 degrees. This minus the 32 total sets my initia at 14. There is no other shin that will allow me to raise my initial and keep all in at 32.

So if I raise my initial I raise my total and I already know that the engine will lose power doing that.

Based on 15 dyno runs my engine likes 32 best. Which is what I have it set for. See above.

A lean condition can also cause that. What primary jets are you running? What do your plugs look like?
I’m not going lean. I have an a/f gauge and it says I’m usually rich, sometimes perfect, never lean.

Howvwer, my plugs do look at tad white.

My 69 440 with an unknown upgrade cam did exactly the same thing- lean surge at cruise.

I had a 625 carb and replaced it with a 750- surge went away.

If you already have an 850- I agree on increasing the primary jet size.

If you are not pinging or lagging, it's probably not timing.
