Steering column length/shear pins

I was hearing some noise in my steering column after I changed out my power steering box in 72 RR. I pulled column. It appears someone put nylon screw (screws) to replace shear pins at some point in its life. I can't tell if it's sheared. But I thought length from first shear pin hole to end of steering wheel thread was supposed to be 17 1/8 inches. Is that correct? Mine is about 16 3/4. I think the screw got sheared but shaft is tight.

they came with nylon pins,if they are sheared off that means your column has collapsed,if nylon not broken then column is good.not sure about measurements though.

Did someone change the shaft length for a steering box swap and redrill the inner?

I don't know. I honestly think I might have busted the shear pins reinstalling the column on my refurbished steering box. I banged on it a bit, probably too much. When I pulled column, I saw what looks to be a cut-off nylon screw. But three of the four holes have no nylon or factory plastic. But I tried to separate the two pieces and it wouldn't budge. I didn't whale on it but it did seem tight.
