My father-in-law (James) bought a brand-new 1965 Dodge Coronet and used it as the family car for many years. He hung onto it and paid someone to do some restoration work on it about 20 years ago. He has no mechanical knowledge, but he did have some money and wanted to save the memories of his old Coronet.
It was handed down to one of his grandkids (my nephew) who kept it running and driving. But once he was old enough to get out on his own, he lost interest in it and gave it to my son, who is also named James, after my father-in-law.
I'm getting started on upgrading the Coronet to make it safer and more reliable for my son to drive. Planned upgrades include electronic ignition, new carburetor, 4 wheel disc brakes, rebuild the front end, new steering box, dual exhaust and some cool wheels and tires.
This forum has already been very helpful in the beginning stages of this project. Thanks for all of your posts and advice.
The sad part is that my father-in-law now has Alzheimers and dementia, and will not get to see his namesake grandson enjoy his old Coronet. But we're going to try to make him proud anyway, despite the fact that he doesn't remember even owning it.
