My father-in-law (James) bought a brand-new 1965 Dodge Coronet and used it as the family car for many years. He hung onto it and paid someone to do some restoration work on it about 20 years ago. He has no mechanical knowledge, but he did have some money and wanted to save the memories of his old Coronet.

It was handed down to one of his grandkids (my nephew) who kept it running and driving. But once he was old enough to get out on his own, he lost interest in it and gave it to my son, who is also named James, after my father-in-law.

I'm getting started on upgrading the Coronet to make it safer and more reliable for my son to drive. Planned upgrades include electronic ignition, new carburetor, 4 wheel disc brakes, rebuild the front end, new steering box, dual exhaust and some cool wheels and tires.

This forum has already been very helpful in the beginning stages of this project. Thanks for all of your posts and advice.

The sad part is that my father-in-law now has Alzheimers and dementia, and will not get to see his namesake grandson enjoy his old Coronet. But we're going to try to make him proud anyway, despite the fact that he doesn't remember even owning it.

Sorry to hear about your Father in-law. :(

I would upgrade the wiring too.

:welcome: aboard!

Welcome to the forum. I'm sure your father in law will be proud of it regardless if he remembers it. You'll be surprised what the human mind reacts to certain things.

Hi, and:welcome:
Sorry to hear about the Alzheimers and dementia, terrible diseases.
But the single-family Dodge is a great story, looking forward to seeing some more. How old is your son, maybe he should join in here too. :)

Hi and welcome to the forum. I'm refurbishing a 1965 Coronet 4Dr. Sed. with A/C, 318 automatic currently. If I can help with anything don't be afraid to ask.

Welcome and enjoy the site. Lots of good info.As you can see early B bodies are my favorite. Looks like you have a very clean car to start with.I always wanted a 65 Coronet, and a 4 door too.Nice !

That’s definitely on the list, but I forgot to include it. I got the engine harness in the mail last week. Looks pretty simple to install. I also need to get the headlight harness. The dash harness is the one that scares me. Not sure if I’ll take that one on or not.

Thanks Mike. I definitely will keep you in mind when I run into a problem. Mine has a 273, original block, with A/C and automatic.

Looks like an AC car

Yes it had A/C originally but it was ripped out a long time ago. I’m thinking of going back with an aftermarket A/C system. Any recommendations would be appreciated.

He’s 17 and looking forward to getting the Coronet on the road.

Great father and son project. Good to see young people interested in the cars from back then. I did the same with my son when he was 15 and now he's 39 and still has that car.

Dash wiring in ‘60’s looks worse than it is. You should look at 80’s&up, that’s a nightmare!

After reading up on the OEM A/C I would recommend aftermarket A/C. I bought Vintage Air for my 1965 Belvedere. No custom kit is available (yet) so I used a universal model.
