I just recently had to deal with them with reupholstering my friends blue interior for his 69 b body and the color they sent him was no where close to his original color. Not only was it darker but the color now had an iridescent sheen to it unlike his original low mileage survivor car. My reproduction Legendary covers that are probably close to 20 years old now matched his original interior almost exactly and did not match the new stuff from them. Now, before anyone goes saying that it could be a dye lot difference or anything like that, I know that original blue interior colors did not have that iridescent sheen to it so its like they got the wrong roll of material and are trying to pass it off to unsuspecting folks.

Is there anyone else reputable who makes seat covers and door panels in the correct pattern, grain, and colors?

Legendary claimed that the originals had that iridescent sheen to it yet the Plymouth Color and Upholstery book doesn't match that.

I just received my pearl white seat covers from them and noticed the same issue. They have a distinct sheen to them. (I'll try to post pics on Saturday)

This wasn't a big deal to me because I plan to dye my door panels and armrests (will order the dye tomorrow). I am expecting the dye to be a perfect match to the covers, but I have that sinking feeling....

So I am also interested in what the FBBO gurus have to say about this.

PS, I am pissed at them that they do not make repo panels for my 440 trim Coronet hardtop.

They used to make up a set for your car if you had originals and sent it to them and then let them make and sell the ones after using yours as a mold. Seems like the company has fallen as being the best in the business.

I’m waiting on a sample from them to see if it matches. I just don’t understand how Legendary who is supposed to be the “Best of the Best “ and had the color dead on maybe 20 years ago now has the color and the sheen SO far off it’s not funny.

Within the last couple weeks, somebody posted a thread about their upholstery and how happy they were with it. I don't recall the company name but they were based in Oregon. The poster was very happy with material and workmanship. I'll see of I can find the thread.

Edit: Looks like it may have been SMS.

We use Larrys interiors same guy on GYC. I think he uses SMS for his custom work. Great guy and meticulous, next time I see him will ask. I have allways had good luck with Legendary but who knows what can happen? Just stay far away from PUI.

I'm thinking the NOS material is running out and all thats out there is reproduction.

Just as khryslerkid alluded to, 20 years ago, we could purchase the bulk material that the factory OEM vendors used for the door glass runs, window felts etc. that we needed in the parts that we were manufacturing. Fast forward to 2018 and we are constantly having to find different sources for the different materials that we have to use.

Within the past two years, the largest manufacture of rubber extrusion that was making product more than 50 years ago has been been sold twice. The last company that purchased the company has no desire to maintain the product line and trashed thousands of dollars of tooling that was necessary to manufacture the extrusions and hoses that we use.

Even though we think that the restoration industry is a large entity in the manufacturing world, we are for the most part a small blip on the screen for some of these industries. There is more now available now for our old cars than we could ever dream of 30 years ago. But there is no guarantee that it will always be there.

That is the reason that I stress to some, that the time to purchase the product is when you can find it. Not meaning it to be doom and gloom, but even with all of the new products that is available now, NOS or good used parts still bring a premium price.

Right on target khryslerkid! SMS supplies Legendary with NOS materials. After 6 months and several (trash, junk,)samples Legendary finally received enough useable material from SMS to make the seat covers for my 65' Belvedere 1. Not a perfect match, but close. SDCoronet, Legendary doesn't make door panels for my car either. Only choice was SMS. Took them almost a year, and I understand that was a record turnaround for them. Some have waited over two years!
Bottom line, probably the best material Legendary could get.

Never mind the source I was thinking of didn't have what you need and a post can't be deleted I guess

That, and the fact the covers are pushin 50 years old, and are sun faded, tarnished with 50 years of cleaning chemicals to dull them, kids pissin on them, and God knows what else during that time? I guess some people are to much of perfectionist, you don't suffer from OCD do you?

We're talking about the material that they have in stock. There used to be lots of NOS material available. It's running out and all thats left is reproduction material which isn't quite the same.

And what if I do have OCD ?
