Overheating 383

Oh yeah, radiator cap is another thing to check, but you're already on it. I agree with the 1/8" hole in the thermostat to make sure an air bubble isn't trapped up in the engine (matters if you've recently changed the coolant)
 
Your block may be plugged! There's a bolt on each side of the motor down near the bottom, pull those plugs and take a screwdriver or something and dig that crap out. Then report back. Good Luck
Got underneath this morning and found those plugs. Was wondering if I should drain the radiator before taking them out or ?
 
Might as well, when done you’ll have a complete fresh refill of coolant.
 
A 160 is too cold. Step up to a 180 high flow thermostat.
 
Just an update for all of you that stopped by and gave advice. Thank you. Checked and done all that has been mentioned plus more. I am at a loss, cannot figure out what the heck is going on. Got an older mechanic at my local Chrysler dealer that I know and bringing in to him to check it out. He is also a pro at the 727 and so going to check that at the same time. Once I get these two jobs off my list, I can get to the "restoration".
 
I'm betting on a plugged up radiator....BUT, I'd suggest
1. Not cooling at idle --> make sure fan clutch (if you have one) only allows you to spin the fan blade about 1/4 turn by hand. Make sure the fan belt is tight. Make sure the fan shroud is in place & reasonably well sealed to the radiator.
2. Not cooling driving down the road --> I'd first take a can of engine degreaser & hose down the outside of the radiator in a u-spray-it car wash & use the power washer to rinse the dirt/grease off the outside of the radiator....back to front is preferred, but do whatever it takes to get it clean.

If 1 & 2 don't do the trick, then replace, re-core or rod out that radiator...my 2-cents.

I have a 67 Charger 383 HP and it keeps overheating. I have flushed the radiator with Prestone radiator flush, changed out my thermostat to a new 180 and then again to a 160, pulled the pump and is fine, and checked the hoses for blockage. Thinking now that maybe my radiator needs to be replaced or redone. Reason: I was reading the 67 manual and it says the 383 is suppose to take 17 qts of coolant (4 gallons+)...??? is this correct? When I have drained the radiator I only get about 2 gallons of coolant. Any ideas anyone?
my '64 Dodge with 383 was overheating but it had a radiator for a slant6/small V-8. I put a 26" 3 core radiator in the car- it makes it to 160-170 -with a 180 thermostat. I'd like it to go to 180, but?I also have 4 different brands of B engine water pumps no two are the same with impeller diameter very weird, the higher performance cooling water pump has 6 blades, not 8. it seems the 26" radiator took over 3 gallons but I didnt really check,I just filled till it was full, 2 gallons of coolant plus water.

Make sure you're running the correct, factory crank pulley. My 383 was running an underdrive crank pulley and I was chasing my tail for the longest time trying to track down why it was running hot.

1821449 is the crank pulley.
1821452 would be the water pump.

As I said, I went through this with mine. I ended up replacing my harmonic balancer at the same time I was going to replace the pulley. I didn't trust the 50 year old rubber of the balancer so I ordered a Trick Flow. I also ordered a reproduction single groove crank pulley from 440 Source. Little did I know the two would not work together...the grooves would not align between the crank and water pump. I ended up having one custom machined.
Expensive lesson.

I took the thermostat from my Dodge V-10- replaced becasue I didn't trust the cool temp gauge, a new one didnt change that, it just runs cool. it has 3 bleed holes in it, I put that in this 383, and with my new 26" radiator it barely reaches 170-the thermostat is a 180.

1821449 is single groove, no power steering....1826053 is double groove, with power steering. Concur?

7 blades, non-clutch/fixed. 180 thermostat, all new hoses and new thermostat housing.

I should also mention the spring in the lower hose is only there from the factory because of how they were filled with coolant on the assembly line. It will do nothing to help cool your engine on the road. If you find that your lower hose is collapsing, you have a problem. Most likely a blockage in the system. Yes, the spring will help prevent the hose from collapsing...but it wouldn't be addressing the actual issue.
I only bring this up because it was posted earlier in this thread.
