Or rant?

Mallory dual point w/mechanical advance #2557801H. Found info stating if the H is in the #, simply means the distributor has YH type advance...the new, and improved??
Just commenting, on something I found, don't like, might or might not help others. My understanding is, there's other distributors that use the same type mechanical advance.

Grabbing the rotor, cam shaft, found up/down play about 1/4". Why? And no, doesn't help much having that much end play. So, I tore into it yesterday, to find out why. (This is by no means my first Mallory dual point, though it's been many years ago.)

Maybe I'll post some pics. The 'weights' are fairly thin metal, held onto the advance plate with E clips, and a pair of nylon bushings, one top, one bottom. Looking at all the end play, those weights flop around pretty good, up and down. How's that for a precise piece!
Put the advance parts back together, but going back into it today, and see what needs to be done. Sure, needs free play there...but, not that much! Makes me wonder what it's doing, running down the road.

Too much trouble for some so they redesigned it.
Are you kidding me! Your advance is the type I'm used to, simple, effective, and real easy to set. (Jealous!) Wanna hear a funny...I have a bag of 20-30 various advance springs, but all for that type advance. On this redesigned deal, ends of the springs are shaped different. Mine is a series 25.

Any rate, my idea of tightening some of the slop, forget it. Can be done, but not worth the trouble. Poorly stamped pieces of metal, making a poor fit, for a poor design. Does it work? Yeah, but could have been much better. Both advance stops, bent tabs, are tied together, don't match, because not bent the same.

Need to find one of the advance spring kits, to work it out.

You could try here...

I dont know who bought out who, Holley or MSD but both brands are all mixed up in their search option. Might even call if you don't see what you're looking for. Might search Summit also. They're good for Mallory/MSD parts. Or even hit up member @HALIFAXHOPS

Good luck

Those springs are hard to find now. Every now and then you can find a tuning set on e bay. I love the mallories but parts are a PIA to get now.

Thanks, kk, but those are for MSDs, not the same.

That's what I hear. You do mean the ones I need? In a pinch, with all the springs I have to play with, I can re-shape the ends.
Don't know if the color codes are the same, old to new. In the docs, should have had a purple/brown, but have orange instead of brown. Those springs give all in at 3000rpm, instead of the 2000-2200rpm I'd prefer.

I'll wait, see how it acts, 20 degree advance w/15 degrees btdc, all in 35. Engine is just slightly more than stock. And, considering how it ran before, the change will say good, or bad.

Try to find one that is made of a bit heavier wire, that will limit it how much????????

What parts you looking for have a few parts ones.

You know what is funny on the standard mopar distributors the la/b/rb interchange up to 15 degrees! Then you have to use the cw or CCW ones since the slot is slanted. Hmm, wonder if it would work?

Hmm, wonder if it would work?
Shaft diameter would be the same, housing the same, yeah would need to be CCW.

Guess my problem is, it had been too many years since I bought one. Never heard of any advance, besides the YL, and if I had got what I ordered, and paid too damn much for, I'd be okay. With what I have right now, it's something that doesn't even look like it would work! Back when I still had the engine running, ran up over 3000rpm, timing mark was all over the place. Signs...wore out parts! Ha! All my parts are new.
I don't care who designed it, or what they say about it, poor excuse.

Ahh, off soapbox.

Where was it manufactured ?
Good question!
With all the info on Mallory out the window, sold to MSD, can only guess MSD made it. Actually made it, since I had to wait 90 days for it. Used parts they had on hand? The # offered, and ordered, was straight up, no H, that should have had the earlier YL advance.

Yeah, I know I'm out of the past! Prefer what I know, and know works, not this so-called new and improved.

I here you hard to beat old school working technology!
