Has anyone used the factory cutouts on the rear deck to install speakers? I know one was for the defroster put could be used for speaker, I think. It will be under the deck and a much cleaner factory look. If you have, could you tell what speakers that you used as I won't do any cutting on the deck. It looks like a couple 6x9's might work? Pics would be great if you have any, thanks.

I used a pair of Pyle speakers and made a harness with black/green wires to plug in to the radio. Even still have the harness from when we took them out.

I’ll get you some info tomorrow when I get to the shop. I installed some in the bee that worked great with no cutting or drilling.

I used Pyle 5 x 7 3way speakers. The drivers side fits without modifications and the right I made an adaptor plate to mount the speaker. This allowed installation
With no mods to the package tray. Pyle model PL573BL is the model speakers I
used.

I have a 1970 Road Runner. I believe the speaker cutouts are the same. If not, I'm sure someone will correct me...

The two cutouts are oriented differently and are different sizes. You can get a 6x9 to fit the passenger side, but there are some fitment issues. I chose to install circular speakers and made small metal inserts so both speakers ended up being oriented the same. I like it much better (my symmetry need is satisfied). I also installed a subwofer behind the rear seat as well, and the combination works great.

Just sharing for what it is worth...

I did this on a 67 and 68. 6x9's are a direct fit. The defrost cutout is a long slot in the middle.

Different directions, but 6x9" on both works fine.

I took the board that was on top of package tray and built a fiberglass speaker enclosure for on top of the tray. Covered with vinyl. The enclosures are difficult to make but I can walk you through the process if you want to go that way. Looks really good when done and a much better sound as most of the sound comes forward and not into the trunk. I built an enclosure for the trunk that helps direct sound up too.
The great thing is it can all be removed to back to original if I ever wanted!
If you’d like to see some pics, let me know, I can post or send some.

Nice! Do you have a picture of the finished package tray and speakers?

On my retro look car, I installed a pair of Jensen 6x9' s... Just like we did way back when...

67 GTX, Went with Alpine three way 6x9" Kicker 10" sub, hidden FM stereo with remote with I- pod Docking, USB, still retain the factory Am radio and front dash speaker.

(2) 10" subs, (2) 6x9 Pioneers (3way), and the single but " split" 4x10 up front.....mounted the 6x9,s under the rear shelf with a number of 3/8" holes drilled in shelf, but to me sounds like crap for some reason? Thinking of trying the old school 6x9 speaker boxes on top of rear shelf may sound better since will be facing forward?

Hi All, does anyone know if the package tray, (the rear speaker deck) on a 69 Road Runner welded in or bolted in? I just discovered that the genius who owned the car before me butchered the speaker openings with snips or something and put the speakers in from the top. The whole deck will have to be replaced.

Welded.
