My 1970 Satellite was finally pulled out of the garage for the first time in 5 years thismorning. Is having new front windshield installed and the original rear put back in. Next week the new exhaust goes in. From what I have read, and listened to, I've so far decided on a manifold back 2.5" dual exhaust with 40 Series Flowmaster mufflers. The part I'm not sure of is to go with either a simple single cross pipe, or a X style dual cross. Does anyone have any thoughts on either style, or the exhaust I've chosen? It's a stock 318, but will most certainly be upgraded in the future. I like an aggressive sound. Thoughts?

My 70 satellite has a stainless 3 inch exhaust with 40 series mufflers. No crossover but it sounds amazing and also has no annoying drone at any speed. My engine is a 360 making around 400hp.

for a 318 go with the h pipe. X pipes boost HP at top end and H pipes boost low end torque.

Shop I used that specializes in building mopars recommended the X set up and headers for my tricked up poly and 3". Frankly I think it was a waste of money among a few other tidbits done by this highly reputed shop...if it was a BB then likely the way to go...figure what exhaust makes most sense with motor/build up you have planned. Consider if you're changing motor like to a BB and going with headers (or not) there will obviously be mod's needed from the install investment on the 318 costing more.

2 1/2 inch with an H pipe. It will still be fine even if you start modifying the engine later. If you are installing one yourself, TTI is excellent. If going to a muffler shop, make sure the exhaust is Mandrel bent. This keeps out all the ugly lumps on the bends, which hurt flow, which is why you're doing it in the first place.( to help exhaust flow). make sure you get either stainless(expensive), or aluminum coated for long life. I liked the Dynomax mufflers on my Dart with a mild 340. I just installed a set of stainless Borla ( expensive) on my Fury, and love the sound too.

Accurate Exhaust, Roseberg ,Oregon heard good reviews about them

TTI has manifold back kits that you will need to give them the exhaust manifolds numbers.
Aeon280’s post is accurate. But the difference is most minimal.

The main difference between the H and X pipe in sound is the X pipe’s sound will be the same sound and rhythm at the tail pipes exit. Like the same note on your stereo. It will be slightly smoother than an H pipe which will have an alternating pulse through each tail pipe exit. You’ll hear the firing order alternate from side
To side based on the bank it is firing on. The sound is a ever so slightly lumpy because the H pipe helps balance the pressure, not share it as in the X.

The H has a more typical 70’s/80’s sound your used to hearing. Aggressive. The mufflers you have chosen will have that aggressive sound.

If you move away from the exhaust manifolds in the future, I suggest 1 of 3 header manufactures.

Doug’s which is a straight 1-5/8 tube
TTI which is a stepped header 1-5/8 - 1-3/4
Hooker Super Comps which is a striaght 1-3/4 tube.

FWIW, the Hooker fits excellent. I have used this header on a small block B body before. It also fits E bodies. They only need a mod (or hammer) with a scattersheild. Excellent ground clearance.
Slightly cheaper than TTI.

The only place my Hooker super comps needed a mod were at the corner of the Lakewood scatter sheild on one tube. Cuda 4spd/small block. Same header was used in my ‘79 Magnum w/a 727. No hammer needed. Slip right in. Price was right for the time. Now Hooker charges more money. When I purchased them, they were $330 vs the $700+ of the TTI header.

I actually ran that header with a 318 in the Magnum. While it was to big of a tube, I did not have any driving or power issues. I didn’t have to tune anything out.
