The other day my 1970 Satellite went to the glass shop to have the rear window installed. It's the original window out of the car. I was told there isnt enough room for the window side to side. Top to bottom was fine, but side to side no. They said a 1/4" of room is required all around the window for proper spacing, and there is only about 1/16" on each side which wont leave enough room for the polyurethane sealer. I only have a few more days before the car goes into storage. I'm desperate to get the rear window in before then. I also cant start cutting the back window metal apart. Does anyone have any experience with rear windows or has run into this before? Any help would be much appreciated.

Find a different shop or do the glass yourself. The rear glass is sealed to the body using butyl rope not urethane ! It literally just lays on top of the butyl, and somewhat held down by the stainless trim...Front uses liquid butyl, not urethane ... it makes a difference on these old cars.

1/16 is plenty of room. If it clears the clips for the moldings, it will work. 1/8 butyl tape using the good stuff. The front uses a gasket with butyl tape on the bottom and about 3 inches up the sides from the bottom.

Sounds good. I will look at installing the glass myself. I've taught myself how to do everything else, lol. I'll see if I can find a tutorial on DIY rear window for this age if car. Thanks again.

I have to reseal my back glass on my car
Where do you get the tape
I just did the front with the special caulking that people suggested and worked great
No leaks from that
Post a pic or p/n

3m butyl rope, I think 3/16 is what I used ... I think ! It comes with spacer blocks for the bottom of the glass to rest on. Make sure everything is clean and dry, it will stick as soon as it touches. I get my stuff from my local auto glass guy. There's always Amazon though ....
