Looking for a new automatic transmission for 318 engine ( 70' charger ). + converter. What stall I should take? Where I can purchase full kit that will fit directly? any suggestions? Whats your experience buying new transmission?

Engine is freshly rebuilt, with 256 int./262 exh. camshaft, 4-barrel 650cfm Holley carb + better intake.

Called to local transmission shop and they asked 2000$ for full rebuild w/o converter, so thought that better would be buy a new one.

Thanks!

Since it sounds like you don't have a trans right now, you might want to think about a doing a 4 speed conversion instead (A518/46RH or A500/42RH variant) .

I needed to have my 727 rebuilt 15 years ago at a local shop (any shop shop should be able to do it for around $1000). A 727 it is very reliable piece, BUT when I get on the freeway the engine rpm is screaming at 65mph in 3rd gear.

I hope to do this conversion with a 42RH next year:

It would be a good option, but I want to keep it stock look.

Where are you located?
Maybe a member from this forum is close enough to give a good local suggestion for rebuilding your existing transmission.

I think Artis may be on the other side of the world. I suggest you pay the $2000 and go with a stock converter if your engine is stock.

Yep, Im not located in USA. Thats huge problem.
Better would be new. Less headaches. Engine is not clean stock, it has no major updates ( stock heads ), but still it will run faster than stock - I hope. :)

Hi Artis on the other side of the world
There are no new trans available and have not been for years
There are rebuilt with widely varying levels of quality
Torqueflytes are a known build- no trick secrets
Two ways to go
Find an A998-999 from a late 80's 360 v8 lock up would allow you to use a looser converter
or find a small block 727 trans- finding a lock up will be hard- you can find the HD ones in vans/ pickups/ Police/ taxi
the big advantage of the 727 is not strength compared to the 998-999 but durability- life expectancy
you need to specify the core
That said if you can find a 92-95 Dakota Durango Pickup A 518 =46RH you would be well advised to do it
This is the non computer controlled OD % lock up trans with the three wire connector
I have over 300K miles on mine and would be glad to walk you through what mods to do to make it last
If you are where it gets hot, or you are going to be working the converter (stop and go, mountains etc) get a big 100 plate and fin cooler with half inch in and out and run half inch lines
A Transgo shift kit can be put in by your builder- but wait- there's more- later
I can ask Transgo
1. who builds trans quality in your area and/or
2 .who is reliable to do a professional level trans and ship
I will be seeing them on Saturday with a German problem child so let me know
that 256 cam should work with a stock converter- best manifold to work with that cam would be stock 4bblor stock clone (a lot of them are) let us know which one
cheers
ps- find a supplier of ATF+4 even for non lock up trans, fully synthetic and has better life hot or cold

im sorry, forgot about this thread.
Soon I will ride to local transmision workshop. When I called, they said it will cost about 1800euros for full rebuild without converter. I tihink its fair price.

P.S
Is this a A904 gearbox? Picture added

Artis start off with an A998- A999 core
much stronger internal parts and a double wrap reverse band
cheers
