I'm putting an H-pipe and TTI exhaust on my 72 340 RR and while I'm at it, I'm swapping mufflers. I have ceremic coated Hooker headers (which I'm keeping) and 2 1/2 inch exhaust. My Flowmasters are too loud (maybe I'm too old:) ) and drone a bit. I've scoured the internet, and my head is spinning. Dynomax, Magnaflow, Borla, Hooker, even Flowmasters, etc., all get various love.
I want it a little quieter (H pipe will help) but definitely still want to keep my classic Mopar rap-rap-rap at idle. I also don't want it too quiet (I've read Dynomax Super Turbos are too quiet). If it matters, 340 is 10.5-1 with .228@50, .533 lift cam. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

I have Magnaflow straight through mufflers which is a little too quiet for my taste.

Kind of funny I have Magna flow 3chambered on my charger and I think they are kind of loud. With an h-pipe. Until I put super bee tips on it was annoying at about 40 up a grade.

Thanks Don. That was my impression from looking over the internet. All I know is the Flowmasters are too loud. I thought they were too loud before, and then my neighbor lady nicely told me her cat runs for cover when I start the car (and I'm across two lawns, in a garage). :)

Here are Magnaflows with 2 1/2 and x-pipe. Magnaflows are not chambered like Flowmasters, therefore they will not drone. If I remember correctly, these are the 18 inch body mufflers. I know, I know, I haven't cut the pipes back yet because I haven't decided how I want them to exit.

Everyone wants that sharp exhaust sound they remember on the 340 powered cars. Then they try in vain to recreate it with aftermarket stuff. Accurate or TTI factory reproduction exhaust and mufflers (not 2-3/4 pipes!) and the factory exhaust bumper tips will bring back memories.

Do you like the flowmaster sound? If you do,and just want it more quiet, just get a flowmaster that is longer, has more baffles, and delta-flow.
I'm using GIANT flowmaster because I liked the sound but didn't want a lot of restriction or LOUD. 53553. They are now ridiculously expensive now imo.
I have also used 3 1/2 hooker aerochamber, liked their sound too.
If I were in the market for mufflers now, i would look at Jones Exhaust at summit . They seem to be a bargain for stainless. ( I have NO personal experience with them, just that I would give them a try).

Another vote for thrush welded mufflers.

For $200 bucks you can buy a cam and lifters!
Agreed ! When I bought mine they were just over $100 each, and I still had almost $600 in the system, doing it myself with mandrel bends. That's why I went with aerochambers for the next car. They were $50 each for 3 1/2 in/ out then.
