Here's the thing with those pieces, the factory anodized them. It's a thin crispy coating that is very hard. You can't file or sand it and bring back any finish. All you can do is remove the anodize useing this proceedure explained by member Malex in my build thread, starting with post 401...

Then you can hammer out the dings, reshape with a file, sand with 220 and work your way up to a 600 to 800 grit, then polish with compound. (I show and explain this doing stainless in my build thread also. Go back a page from the above link) That will be good enough for a driver. If you want something better, you'll have to look for a good set without having to do all the work. They're out there.

I have a feeling they would look worse when I was done with them. I was thinking about some body filler and chrome paint

.... Nice job you did on your metal work. !

If you want them done to a #1 finish, contact Bill Petro, at Special T's Unlimited. He can probably give you an estimate after looking at your pics, or he may even have a set ready to go. Joe Suchy would be another good contact for these, as he lives for the '62-65 Mopars also...

If you have time and patience, get a copy of "How To Restore Metal Auto Trim" by Jeff Lily, and tackle it yourself.

I tried sending Bill Petro a email but he has a odd Web site that was trying to set me up with with some strange passwords and info gathering stuff. I contacted Joe Suchy and he didn't have any. Has anyone tried body filler and chrome paint?

Thanks Higgins, message sent. We'll see how much this is going to cost. Looks like no one thinks much of my cheap fix idea

Yeah report back nothing inexpensive in this hobby. Your idea will work but probably won't look the most original. But it's alot about budgeting too. Good luck.

I got the number of a local "Tin Guy" from a local auto supply. I'll check with him and see what he say's. I hate thinking how much money I've spent on this car already. It gets to the point of "If I do this I should do that" It never seems to end. I was thinking about getting the bezels powder coated as a option. This car is what shall we call it, a 20/20 car. Looks Good at 20 feet and 20 mph or maybe 30/30

Lots of options but they are expensive. Those outer rings are like gold since about every 62 has been dinged up front by the lights. I found a used one one here a few years ago that was nice for a good price. OEM are about $450 a pair if you can find them. Good luck

If I remember right, calling Bill Friday through Monday is a good time. He did my '63 grill, and was a big help on some tips for other parts I was working on. I'd like to find a set of original outer rings for my car, as mine are also quite rough. As far as the body filler & paint, give it a try. They may be decent enough to hold you over 'til you find a better set...

I think you'll play hell finding a N.O.S. pair for $450,last pair GLNOS in MI had was $1200 and I've seen others in that price range .I was fortunate enough to have a friend trade me his N.O.S for mine that were in very good condition, his reasoning was that my car was more deserving than his.Friends like that are hard to come by.Also,on another note,if you find a pair good enough have them re anodized. You can polish the aluminum all you want but eventually it will end up with a milky looking condition.

Hmm, that car seems familiar. Did I get a license plate light from you a few years back. Poor memory but the name Bill and a FN rifle somehow are caught up in my memory

With this part you're probably right.

(and a FN rifle somehow are caught up in my memory)

In my eye's the FN is the coolest battle rifle ever made. Wish I had one :D

I can fix them. But I can’t brite dip them like the factory did. King of Trim would be the one stop shop if you wanted it to be factory looking. I can just fix them, polish the snot out of them and paint the areas that need painting (grille h/l bezels).

Still waiting for a couple other quotes but what would you think it would cost ?
