My 1970 Dodge seems to charge at 15 to 16 volts. Just put on a new alternator as the old one had the output lug break. Plus sometimes it will surge briefly and the lights will get real bright for a sec. It has the 6 AL IGNITION, MULTI SPARK. Can this ignition be causing a problem with the charging system? 440 engine. Dual field alternator.

Make sure all connections are tight ! My 70 dart was overcharging and turned out to be poor terminal fitment at the voltage regulator, replaced that connector and all is good !
Have someone watch the volt gauge or meter while you put your hands on every charging component and give a little wiggle, if the meter fluctuates then you know that's your issue ....

my voltage is a tad high after changing the alternator recently. I plan to change the regulator soon, but I think I may have a voltage drop to the existing regulator that would cause it to push the voltage higher. I have to check the supply wiring to the regulator in case something is loose.

Did you change the voltage regulator?
Yes, new regulator. I will check all the connections too. Is the regulator supposed to be grounded? The bolts holding it to the firewall don't get tight, so it may not be grounding , if it is supposed to.

Well this is a 70 Dart also! LOL. Where did you get the new connector? What motor do you have in it? Mine's a 440 with a Paxton blower.

The bolts should ground the regulator, they must be tight! I think I ordered the regulator connector through Napa... mine is a #'s match 340/4spd car ..
