Hey I recently rebuilt my Carter AFB 9636 with this kit-

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Edelbrock-...rformance-Carter-AFB-Rebuild-Kit/380500607765 ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649

the accelerator pump seems to be very stiff and the shot is not good only comes out at the end of the stroke. are those blue accelerator pumps known to be bad quality. I noticed on a website the blue one is advertised to be 13/16 do I need a smaller one for my casting number?

the old acc pump was rubber too but a different color. It didn't work great before either.
For those who say to use a leather pump, Apparently they dont make a leather pump for Carter AFB casting number 9636s. So what now?

Did you bend the linkage rod to give you the correct installed height on the acc pump stem?

I have a Carter BBD 2 barrel on my 72 318 that acts the same way. I replaced accelerator pump twice with so called ethanol safe pump. Sometimes I get a decent squirt, most times a late dribble and engine stumble. So I am also hoping someone will lead us to a better quality pump.

Could the pump well be worn out from non-leather acc pump? Seems I remember someone hawking stainless steel sleeves yrs ago(?). Just throwing it out, never experienced myself.

Make sure you dont have a piece of dirt in the squirters. The leather pumps don't work that well from what I hear.

Looking up your carb and trying to determine what accelerator pump it uses. This kit shows an orange one in the pic of the kit. If thats what you get or not is another question. Anyway heres the kit I came up with.

Now if you click on the pump to the right...

In the description it's a Eldebrock 1470 pump which is the blue one a lot of us have trouble with in the Eldebrock. We'll replace it with a 1467 (orange) and it solves the problem.

I'll leave it up to you to research the measurements of what you have and what the 1467 measures. I see it is 13/16". They make four different width pumps and numerous lenth shafts. Doing the cross reference it looks like the 1467 is what you want. Maybe someone on here has done this before with the stock AFB carb.

No I have not. Is that a standard tuning technique to bend the linkage? Do you know what the correct height would be or would I just bend it until it seems to work better?

That's only if you can't get enough throw out of the linkage. It should work fine in the center hole on the leaver. Make sure the "S" hook is in right. If it's installed backwards it can bind.

As k kid said..
The s shaped link needs to go on in the right direction (as you look at the front of carb the "s" needs to look like an s)
If it is installed backward it will bind and stumble etc.

Above +1, there shud be a measurement listed for height of pump shaft above carb lid in the instructions/specs( always needs checked).

Make sure the check balls seat tight if not most of the gas will back up and not squirt

if my carb was empty for any length of time, the accelerator pump wouldn't squirt until it sat in fuel for a while........ I assumed it "shrunk" a bit when dry, and swelled up to size when fuel soaked
