Yeah, I know..this is one of those open-ended get a million opinion questions but I'm just curious what's working for everyone, and is the engine stockish or modified. My 1-year-old black MSD Hi-Vibration epoxy filled coil took a dump on me as I was backing out of the garage a bit ago. Car would start with my foot in the throttle but back it off to 1000 RPM and it would just die. After some checks I swapped in a spare coil and it fired right up and idled normally...so I'm in the market for a new one. 440 pushing up around 475-500hp... Thanks folks!

Stock coil won't handle it?
Maybe....for a souped-up engine I'd rather use a more performance oriented unit though. I forgot to mention, I use a Mopar USA Chrome box with a firecore distributor. I mount my coil sideways so I thought the epoxy version may be better suited...although, the ONLY time I've ever had a coil leak, it was mounted vertically!

PerTronix Flamethrower III coil, Pertronix Ignitor III ignition, ballast bypassed.

Just a regular ol' MSD Blaster red coil, the kind they sell in local parts stores. Got it hidden up under the washer bottle.

I've had an old accel super cool in my charger for 27 years. I imagine that the newer oneso are hotter, but the reliability has been terrific. Seems like everyone has quality problems these days

Using cast iron tach drive DC distributor, an unknown series Mallory box that weighs about ten pounds, bought from a supershops reman

sale (does that tell you it's age?) and an ancient accel super coil.

I bought the reman mallory box, a reman 250 fuel pump, and something else that I don't remember. Both pump and box still going strong. WELL under a hundred bucks.

Well I just 'broke down' (pun-tastic!) and ordered up another msd. It worked good until it didn't lol as with anything made today some last, some don't.....good info here though keep it coming guys thanks!

Some kid that MSD stands for Might Suddenly Die lol.

I've always wanted to try one one out with the advance curve adjustment but my Pertronix is fantastic!

A stock coil was enough to get Buddy Baker's hemi in the #88 to over 200 mph in 1970. 600 HP, 600 pounds of torque. Turned 6,400 - 6550 rpm.

Just sayin'...

ya...stock auto parts store 40.000 volt coil will be fine.
...but you didn't want to hear that.

Sidenote I've added "whatchyall" to my spell checker.

A stock coil will produce 30kv all day long,
a spark plug ,wires &a good cyl shouldn't
need over 15kv ever?

That's awesome. I wish I could get a Buddy Baker coil... When I was using a stock type that thing would break up when the motor got to about 4000. The last time I used a parts store coil it lasted 3 months... I wish there were still new Chrysler USA built units like the old days for sure. I've had good luck with MSD and accel, (except for this latest one obviously!)
