440/727 install in one piece?

If you haven't already slipped that thing in, for what it's worth, a little clue. Leave the 727 fill tube OFF, just gets in the way. Easy to mount it in, after engine/trans are in place.

Either way I would have the hood off for at least another week. It stays cooler, easier to check for leaks, tune and it's kind of cool to drive around without a hood.

I pulled my 361 and trans together out of the '62. Boy what a tight fit. Putting a 440 back in I wasn't about to try it with the trans hooked up. Too much weight and tight fitting for my liking.

So I dropped the 440 in first, resting the pan on the center link. (Thin padded board in between)

Then installed the trans from underneath. Lots of crawling around, doing the header install from underneath ect.

It was a toss up between dropping the K-frame and doing it this way. I'd probably try the K-frame method next time.

I would put the trans in first, it's easier to make sure the torque converter is seated you can sit in the engine compartment.
You just need to support the front of the trans. A heavy wire will do it.

All of which is very easy when you lower the body over the engine. As stated earlier everything can be assembled easily while on the dolly and no risking scratching the paint.

I’ve done it in two pieces (never again) and stuffed it in one piece from the top (tight squeeze), but never did it from the bottom.

I’d be grateful if someone’d show a couple pix and maybe ‘splain how it’s done from the bottom.

It's like the factory did it. Most every restoration I've see, it's done from the bottom. You build everything on the K frame then drop the car down on it.

Here ya go...

That's the way I've always done it.....and if you don't have the tilting engine leveler, let the trans land on an old creeper to help guide it into place.
Great idea! i was just going to get rid of an old creeper but now I think I will keep it.

Yet another option, you can lift the rear of the car to cut the angle of the engine/trans assembly down.
