Looking for the Good, the Bad and the Ugly on full roller rockers for BBC engines. Street/Strip low deck 470.

check retainer clearance designs and that pushrod angles (ball center) matches the actual pushrod angle (when installed) (chec at half lift as well as seat and full lift
what ratio? (s)

If BBM stock or long valves?
You do know you need to raise and offset your shafts?

agree on the shaft needsles- not needed and a big oil leak
and comp used to make two lines one junk

(Ok I'm sure that's just a typo!?) I've used Harland-Sharp before and they were excellent but can be very pricey. I can say this, you are wise to avoid the need-bearing styles. Try to use bushed rockers. I don't believe Crane makes the full-roller style for B/RB anymore (I could be wrong on that)..Comp's are good too.

just picked up the Harland Sharp for the part #s are different for the Trick Flow heads, they are super nice!

probably a little over kill for an engine thats not going to the races much, but i wanted some nice stuff...not disappointed

I'm running Indy (not sure who makes them) rockers on my 493 RB. Knock on wood, haven't had any issues so far. I went with the bushed rocker to avoid the oiling problems I encountered years ago with the full roller. I assume they have corrected this problem with improved technologies.
So Crower and Isky make the 440source rocker? I thought they were a knockoff from China.
 
We went with t&d on mine, not many choices with the victor max wedge heads. They lined up pretty nice.

Great article, as all of yours are. One question I’ve always wanted an answer to is the use of needle type roller bearings on a rocker arm. They may lower friction but at the expense of lowering oil pressure through the extra bleed off area and reduce longevity by reducing the contact area since most of the load is supported by just a few needles. Have you ever done back to back testing on bushed vs bearing rockers to see if there really are any horse power differences?
 
I'm not sure what valves or springs I'll be using. The heads are bare Edelbrock Performer RPM. 84cc's. Just need to ensure spring diameters will work with the rockers.
 
Isky and Crower make rockers- not sure about for BBM Isky has the Iron rockers have not checked on rollers for years- they are and most likely not for 440 source
real issue with full rollers are the shafts
the rollers usually do not rotate the cages so the rollers go back and forth in the same places
shafts get brinneled
you need crome moly shafts that have been deep case heat treated if you want them to last
DO NOT USE CHROME Plated SHAFTS- those are for bushed or stock
Check with rocker arm rebuilders in Redding CA (area) (or whatever their new name is) they had some outstanding rockers but I do not know if they are still in production
they are a good source of info on rockers and shafts- would trust their advice
Tripples - Battleship springs, 2" valve gear =all needs more selection and install work
quite frankly the full rollers bleed oil and are more prone to failure- spend the money with B3 and get the geometry right
take a look at wagonmans posts on the trick flow thread
I am not sure he rolled the motor over his stripe looks too good to be true

Type of rocker all depends on spring pressure and usage. Flat tappet cam, Crane or Hughes will be fine. Roller cam, Harlan Sharp or T&D would be my choice.
 
I noticed in the new Mancini Racing flyer they have a Harland Sharp (MRE57001-15)1.5 bushed roller rocker listed. After some research, I discovered these have the same warranty, built by HS, in the USA, using same materials and process as other HS rockers. Only difference is they're bushed instead of bearings. I'm not trying to "cheap out". But at almost half the price, these may be the ticket. Anyone have real world experience with these?

I have a set of bushed Erson 1.75 rockers which I got from RAR many many years ago New Erson folks have lost the dies many years ago (they take much grinding)
I would not dismiss the shorter cam with the high ratio rockers- you might pick up some torque Engine Masters style
I have the rocker stands milled off and aluminum stands
how did you get your geometry correct to match whatever the camgrinder had in mind?

I've used the Mancini rockers and have had no problem. However, they are not bushed, the aluminum body runs directly on the rocker shaft.

Harland Sharp I am using harlon sharp full rollers on my 509, this is the second engine they have been on, they are the very last thing on the car that I worry about, harlon sharp, once and done. P.S. 75 lbs oil pressure.

Mancini and Harland Sharp claim the 57001-15 rockers are bushed. Guess I'd better do more research.
