Whatchyall using for a coil?....

I have been running a Blaster II coil of unknown age for the 8 years I have had this car along with an MSD 6 box and MP dizzy. The coil recently developed a burn through in the tower which was arcing over to the Neg terminal. Quickly looking at the choices in a new coil I went with another Blaster II. Didn't seem to be much choice in old school ignition coils.

My old one was mounted upright, the instructions say specifically to mount it upright. Don't know what happens if it is mounted on its side?

They say, the oil can leak out if mounted sideways..but heck the only only one I've ever seen leak was mounted upright so go figure! Maybe got too hot too often.

I use 8 coils on my big block.

MSD Blaster. The Black one. High vibration. About 13 years no problems.

I purchased the Flame thrower 40001, 1.5 ohm.....still need to know if I'm suppose to remove ballast resistor? If so, where do those wires go?
Thanks!

I should add. I have Mopar electronic dist, and this ballast resistor....

What a lot of guys will do when bypassing the ballast resistor, is take the resistive element out of the back side and replace it with a short length of 10 or 8 gauge wire. Make sure the new connection points can't touch the firewall, and then it can be re-mounted and everything will still look factory. Or just splice the wires together properly and eliminate the ballast altogether. As to whether you need to remove it? There's tons of conflicting information about that, I prefer to leave them in place but there are many arguments both ways you'll just have to decide what applies best to your setup..

So if I leave it, no harm done?

I have been using Standard Products Blue Streak coils for decades on my 340. I got them originally when i was 18, just because it matched the color of the engine! hahahaha, I put on a new one when I did the restoration just because the color on my old one I got back in the 80's has faded color, its now my backup. I also use the standard products distributor cap and Moroso Blue Max Plug wires. Slightly modified motor with bigger cam and higher compression, no issues. Here is a picture when I was putting the car back together.

I would leave it in place with the Mopar ignition as i believe that is how it is designed. With aftermarket ignitions, such as Pertronix, HEI style, etc., they are designed to be operated off of full battery voltage.

This ones been on the Charger for ten years since 1977 then it was moved to a '74 Jeep cj5 for rough off road use, then about four years ago it was taken from the jeep and went back on the Charger.

Yeah, I know..this is one of those open-ended get a million opinion questions but I'm just curious what's working for everyone, and is the engine stockish or modified. My 1-year-old black MSD Hi-Vibration epoxy filled coil took a dump on me as I was backing out of the garage a bit ago. Car would start with my foot in the throttle but back it off to 1000 RPM and it would just die. After some checks I swapped in a spare coil and it fired right up and idled normally...so I'm in the market for a new one. 440 pushing up around 475-500hp... Thanks folks!

Same here on the MSD Blaster 2 Coils

My Hi Vibration Epoxy filled started acting up yesterday after one year , and that one replaced a MSD Oil Filled Blaster 2 Coil that failed last year

Anyways I really enjoyed reading this thread about coils by ( Dave Ray ) on of all things Team Chevelle

Some interesting facts even though it’s a few years old but

For me it’s time for another coil and it definitely won’t bee MSD
