D34: Light Duty Automatic Transmission is what is on my fender tag. I have a 400 4bbl and the car is all original.

I assumed that meant a 904 but read on another thread here that all big blocks got the 727. Does that just mean a cheaper/lighter 727? I bought the car and promptly put it in storage until I finish my current project. I can't go look right away and am just curious. I am thinking of stroking the 400 and leaving it as stock looking as possible. However light duty behind a stroked 400 means "future grenade" in my books.

Nope, all big blocks had 727's. Light duty had to do with the front clutch packs, band ratio, servo springs and the like.
By 1974 the heavy duty 727's were in trucks and big blocks were gone by 1978. I think some Motorhomes had them till 1980 but that might be a myth.
FYI guys running in Stock and Super Stock running in the 9's or 10's run 904's. You will be fine with the tranny you have. I have a 1973 tranny that was behind a 451 stroker with 100's of runs on it and it now is behind a 472 Hemi in my 65.
If you have it rebuilt a good tranny shop can up-grade it anyway you like.

All Big Block are 727. The light duty doesn't affect it much. 3 pin planets which will be fine. At worst you will have to upgrade the front drum to a 4 friction unit. The other possibility is depending on year it may be a lock-up. This would be identified by a smooth and of the input shaft, (no splines). It can be converted as well.

Sorry, I stupidly put the year only in the thread title . Mine is a 1974 Satellite Sebring Plus.
