Personally I don't. 2 reasons. 1) It's taking someone's job .2) I'm don't get paid or a discount to do it .

Never use them. I hate doing what the store is being paid to do themselves. Agree also with - don’t want to take someone’s job.

That's about all I use, less headache, and when at the grocery store its about the only thing that ever has any open registers, all the regular checkers usually have lines. Its nice, because they have one for small amoutns and one for larger using a basket amount. Soon my local grocery store, I think next year will have check as you go, where you ring stuff as you put it into your basket with a wand, then just have to stop at a register to to weigh and pay and off you go!

I don't ever use them unless a person comes over and helps me with the transaction.
I have the same feeling as xtraoldestock, It takes jobs away. But like John Pinette once
stated in one of his comedy routines, When they make me use the self-checkout lanes,
I have a two-for-one sale!

I think that they a bullshit idea that reduces customer service. Sometimes, stuff will not scan right and now you are stuck waiting for the "assistant" to come over to help.
Home Depot uses these...A 4 unit setup with one assistant. Many times, the 4 unit self checkouts only have 1 or 2 customers. With that in mind, why not skip the self checkout entirely?
I went in there for saw blades, NOT to work a part time job.
I'm not as pissed about the elimination of jobs as I am pissed about the same thing that pisses me off in general: Something that is new should be an improvement of an existing idea or system that it replaces.

Absolutely NOT!!!!!!!
Stupid is as stupid does! No discount for doing the merchandiser's job & taking jobs away from those who need one & want to work.

I do when I go to Wal-Mart. It's faster. Some of the cashiers at the Wal-Mart here can be kind of rude. I don't like to catch attitude just for shopping at the store.

Never , the machines don't pay taxes and take people's jobs even if there part time .
I also like talking to people .

NO !! Besides the other good reasons noted in prior posts, They are not paying me to do their job !!!! IF you do this, YOU ARE DOING FREE WORK FOR THE COMPANY YOU'RE GIVING YOUR MONEY TO.

There's always someone there saying why don't you try the self checkout and my reply is the same you'll need the self checkout at the unemployment line so learn how to use it .

I do if it's more convenient for ME. If there is a long line at the cashier, and if no-one at the self serve, and if I have five items or less, and if I dnt have fruit or veg that has to be id-ed or weighed. Otherwise always use a cashier, mainly because I use cash. (What a concept?!)

LOL...then stop shopping there. I've never even set foot in a Walmart.

There was an older thread on this. Here's what I posted.

"Usually, they have 1 monitor to oversee 4 self-checkout registers. In this day of gov't mandated minimum wages, you can't blame a business for using technology to increase efficiency and lower overhead. Now don't get me wrong. I own a retail business and Home Depot and Lowes are my enemy. But, the reality is that if gov't tells us that we have to pay unskilled workers $15 an hour minimum, you can't blame the business owner for improving their bottom line. When I overheard 4 of my part-time minimum wage employees discussing how great it was that there might be a $15/hr min wage in NJ, I said look at your buddies. If that happens, two of you get fired to pay for the other 2. They were not happy."

No I don't. But for those that do,I must admit that usually there is a employee there to help.At least one person still has a job.

Same reason I wont use an ATM! Don't even have a card. Gotta ask a teller for my allowance! lol

Maybe one reason for them is the fact some minimum wage employees under 30 call in sick at least once or twice a month, are late all the time, steal from their employers, are lazy, have bad attitudes, can't effectively communicate with other people or speak English, and on and on. Home Depot would be better off with a chicken behind the register and don't even think about giving one extra change on a $20.00 bill to get a dollar back...they call for managers who use calculators to add 2 cents. I'd rather use the self checkout than deal with a stuck up idiot getting a piece of the money I just spent.
