Credit scores....

It’s crazy how long it takes to build a decent score, then it drops like crazy if you **** up once. Missed a payment on 2 of my credit cards when I was laid off and my score dropped significantly.

Credit scores vary between the 3 reporting agencies. If you want you can register with someone like Credit Karma for free and they give you your Transunion and Experian scores and do not deduct.
Some banks give you the same thing , mine gives me my FICO which is what most finance institutes use to qualify...
I just watch (CK) for fraudulent activity or errors on my report. Gives me a false since of control.

you youngsters will soon find out that "credit" is what keeps you poor....... start adding up all the interest on everything every month, it'll piss you off....... I gave that **** up long ago

If you freeze your credit and you want another credit card. Then you ask where your trying to get credit which credit bureau they use. Only un freeze that one.

Why is it that merely by checking your credit score, it can be lowered, even slightly?
Imagine how stupid it would be that every time you checked your weight on a scale, you gained 5 lbs. What if every time you looked in the mirror, you got just a little bit uglier.

Mine isn't...
Used to be that way but now I think the Laws have changed?

All this crap you speak of? This is why 'CASH IS KING"! Then you don't have to worry about stuff like this.

The worst is the plan for a cashless society. No under ground economy. No hidden stash of cash.

Kern, school me on this credit score thing. Oh, if it’s low, then you pay more for insurance, car payments, loan rates, etc. Neverending “screw you” from the powers that be! I might be wrong!

There's nothing wrong with credit as long as you pay it off every month and deal with a financial institution that has a reasonable rate. I've had one credit card all of my life and am disciplined in how I use it. Additionally, most all people need credit for 2 purchases that are critical in their lives...a house and an automobile. About every purchase other than those 2 is discretionary.

Credit is a necessary evil unless you have tons of cash. Buying a car? Very few people have $30-50k they could pull out and not worry about it.

All these responses, don’t hear any numbers.

Mine was 754 iirc before I got laid off, Couple tough situations during lay-off forced me to miss a couple payments on credit cards. Back to work and working on getting in back up to that area. Like I said earlier it’s crazy how fast they’ll take that nice score from you.

Depends what #'s you want Fico numbers aren't the same as the bullchit numbers used by C/K

Credit Karma can give you a good Indication of what condition your credit history is in, but the numbers seen aren't always accurate. Hard hits regarding inquiry will be seen if you are applying for a House, or any non real property purpose(Car, Furniture, Lowes, etc)
Rule #1) A late payment of even one dollar will negatively Impact your score the same as a 2,000 dollar monthly payment. a delinquency is a delinquency.Whatever you do, don't miss a payment past 29 days.
Rule#2)avoid cards from Sears,Lowes,Home depot.Even if they give you a line say of 6,000 and you don't use it, The report will consider it a potential unsecured debt, and will ding you.
Three zero balance cards? When you try to qualify for a House, each card takes $50 bucks away from your total allowed ratios.$150 Bucks less that can potentially keep you from buying the best house.
Rule#3) If you need to purchase a big ticket item like a car, don't ask the dealership to finance it if you have any doubts about your rating.
They will run you through every lender they solicit until someone agrees to loan you the money. Five banks in an Hour? Five Inquiries. And, they stay on your report for 24 calendar months, to the day.

I thought it would be fun to check my credit score. I don't have one. Guess it's been too long since I used any credit.

Pay your bills on time.
There is nothing wrong with having and using a credit card, try and pay it off every month or at least watch the balance and dont let it get out of control.
Don't have dozens of credit cards
You'll never have to worry about your credit rating
