Neutral safety switch

Got my neutral safety switch out and measured it. It is dead..

I have the single wire neutral safety switch. My trans is from ‘69, shouldn’t it be the 2- or 3-pin switch to be correct?

Car is from 68 with the backlight switch on the steering column.

The change from the single-pin NSS to the 3-pin occurred around 5-15-68, so all '69 transmissions should take the 3-pin. The single pin switch will work OK in a '69 but not vice versa.

It is, however, cheaper and easier to get the 3-pin style...just get the small 3-wire pigtail connector for it and (properly) splice your car's existing wire to the center wire of the pigtail..works just fine. (OK I think it's the center wire I could be wrong, but a simple continuity test will show you which wire to connect to)

I will change it to the 3-pin style as you said. Maybe also route the reverse switch from the steering column to that 3-wire pigtail. Seems like a better way.

Are you sure? Just my opinion here, but why cut up the factory wiring to run a wire through the firewall and to the outside of the car, and have one more wire exposed to the under-car elements, when it works in the factory location? Again, just my opinion but I'd leave the backup light switch wiring as-is...

The column-mounted BU light switch is activated by a pin that's known to snap off and is a hassle to replace, in that case it's wise to route it outside but if it ain't broke..........

You’re probably right,BUT I put the column mounted reverse on mine. Less wiring outside, 86K on mine, but better safe than sorry?

Which roster tail is in there?

You are both right! My column mounted BU switch is not cracked but does not seem to be very reliable tho. There is one reproduction I saw at CI ($131.99 # MB568) but appears not to be OER in any way. Anyone tried on of these?

I second you on that, running less cable outside the car is a factor. But where do I get a proper working single wire NSS if I can't find a NOS?
What about the reconditioned from A&A trans 12410AR? $50.00 seems very reasonable priced..

Which single wire there are two, have one from a 66 904 I can part with used.

Correct, the one on the left is for pushbutton shifted, the one in the center is for console/column shifted up to early '68.
Part number is 2495537

I know some combos of NSS and rooster tails that weren’t supposed to be paired do work. But do you know if the rooster of my 69 trans works with the single wire NSS (68)?

Wasn’t able to verify this bc my switch was dead from the beginning when I got the car.

Yes, as I stated in reply #21, the '64-'68 single-pin switch will work in the '69-later transmission but the 3-pin switch won't work in the earlier transmission.
