Im considering removing my 69 Coronet dash to paint it. Is it physically possible to remove it without removing the windshield ? Particularly if I remove the front seats to make it easier.

NO

No. Here's why. See the screws that fasten the metal dash to the cowl? It's impossible to get to them without removing the glass first.

I've heard some say it can be done, very carefully and slow with an open end wrench. Then remove the U-nuts from the body and put them on the dash, the bolts will now go in from the bottom .... so I've heard !

Thats one of the roadblocks that stalled my build session last winter.

That sucks. But, at least it’s not welded in place like some cars.

Opinions on whether or not the dash pad can be removed with the dash in place? I want to change mine out.

I believe it can be with dash in place. There are a couple nuts in the center of pad holding it to dash if I’m not mistaken. But, you’ll have to take out radio, ash tray and duct work if your car is equipped with ac.

You can remove the pad without removing the metal dash frame. But it is easier when everything else is out of the way. It is a process but pays dividends for a long long time when the result is a new looking dash.

Thanks much! I spent some time today taking most of the stuff out of the dash so it currently looks pretty much like the photos you posted. I'm dangerous now!

Although the word "no" has been mentioned several times here, i did remove and reinstall my dash without removing the windshield.
I am stubborn by nature, but this time it paid off. :)
The dash is hold in place by these C-clips (not sure how you guys call them..please help me here) where a screw is screwed in from top.
I cut these clips first in the bend, after i cut the part with the threads were the screw goes through.
For this i had the dash completely emptied and used a Dremel with flex shaft extension and a small cutting disc, they all jumped out when i went through.
Installation is done by buying a screw and clip kit but this time you reverse the way of installation with installing the clips on the dash and insert the screws from the bottom.
Only modifications required can be you have to "flatten" the clips a bit more so they stay in place while positioning the dash...and cut the sharp tip of the screws otherwise they stick out.

No, did not make any pictures...only proof of happening is in my below resto topic, Post #51.

Good thing is, in the future it will be easy to remove the dash again if required.

Pad can definitely be changed while the dash is still in the car. I've done it a couple of times. One of those flexible 1/4" extensions make it a lot easier.

Not to minimize your ingenuity but the question was about whether one can remove the dash pad without removing the metal dash frame.

I stand corrected.

Actually, you can remove the dash with the windshield in place; you just need the right tool.
