the question has come up about the gas cap on a 66-67 belvedere being used on a satellite. am i wrong in thinking that it was only used with the belvedere style trim? or was it used on a satellite without the side trim? .... i have only seen chrome or painted cap's on the satellites.

My knowledge is that the fancy gas cap was only on the Belvedere because it finishes off the hole in the side trim. Only ones painted the body color is correct for Satellites is my understanding! Does that mean Chrysler/Plymouth NEVER put a fancy one on a Satellite? Everybody knows Chrysler's weirdness, right???

I'm the one with that cap on my Satellite. It was an NOS replacement cap the previous owner put on after the original was stolen off the car. That cap looks like a top of the line cap, and the Satellite is the top of the line model. So I just figured it's correct for the car. But I really don't know. I'm sure someone here will know the answer, though! Maybe Fran knows? Oh...Fran??

My 66 Satellite is also an odd one. I have the Belvedere ll trim with the matching gas cap.
oddly enuff .... my build sheet ... fender tag and all sez satellite ... still has satellite on the glove box door .... but belvedere pre-fix in the vin. ... even hagardy sez its a satellite .... someone took all the trim that gos on top of the fenders and rockers off and put some pep-boys crap down the side .... strange car

66 Satellite plain witk a bar that's horizontal when tight.

Odd is the name of the game with some of these cars. My car is WW1 white paint - documented on the IBM punch card. Everything else lists LL1 turquoise - the fender tag, certicard, and window sticker. On the window sticker, someone attempted to erase the LL code and wrote WW over the top of it. There is really no question that the car has always been white, though. I figure the fender tag (if that's what comes first) was incorrectly punched and the certicard and window sticker simply copied the incorrect paint code from the fender tag.

Does your fender tag match your radiator support numbers? Mistakes were made on fender tags.

Yes, all of the numbers tie together between all of the documents and the core support. The only odd ball thing is the exterior paint code.

I found a few pics of the cap like mine on other Satellites. These don't prove anything, of course, but to me they do raise the question of whether that cap could have been put on some Satellites.

You've have the documentation to show they messed up.
I like the Satellite trim simpler. Styling is like my first car a yellow/ black top 64 Olds Starfire convertible. Saw it in a stack of flatten cars a year later on a flatbed.

God knows about that. The original owner did some changes. One was a 67 flip cap but no trim ring, ruined paint on quarter. Called him up in 1980 to see if he had the original cap, yes he did. In 2015 picked up all original paper work and window sticker. Certicard loss in a house fire.

i have all of mine and thay match ... core support .... door jam .... no window sticker tho .....

First off, I realize this thread is a bit dated. But I have some older first-hand info that may be of interest. In 1972, as a 19-year-old, I purchased a 1966 Satellite from the local used car dealer in Essex, Maryland. The car was immaculate - silver with red interior, 318, automatic. When purchased, it had the standard, plain, body-colored cap. Given the condition and young age of the car, I'm assuming it was the original factory cap. Unfortunately I can't recall any other Satellites from back in the day. But it seems odd to offer a optional cap from the factory - especially when the Satellite was basically its own trim package.

99.9% sure cap was added by someone who liked the look. I'm the 3rd owner of my Satellite. the original owner put a 67 GTX flip cap on with no trim ring. Pissed gas on quarter and wrecked the paint. When I had the car painted called the orig owner to see if he had the cap, he did. People add things to there cars to suit there taste. To me a Belvedere II gas cap on a Satellite looks like a boil on the cars quarter.
