1968 318 engine stock with 2 bbl carb. I am going to do a minor overhaul. Burning oil and not just the valve seals. About 85,000 miles. Sat , not running for several years. Lifters noisy and will need replaced.
Question: I think the cam should be replaced too. Recommended cam which might give a little more performance or sound, and still give me as good as, or better gas mileage than a stock cam? I was getting 19 mpg highway driving with the 68 Sport Satellite , auto trans, and dual exhaust. Any help is appreciated.....................MO

Wow, 19 MPG with a 318 seems darn good. I built a 360 for my van, replacing the 318. I used a Comp High Energy 260. Good power, mileage went up 2-4 MPG.

In years past, my wife had a 68 Coronet and a 75 Dodge Coronet with that engine. Mostly highway miles , about 50 per day going to work, rural highways, 55-60 mph and they both got that kind of mileage............................MO

Sounds good.

Cornpatch, FWIW, I had a ‘79 Dodge Magnum w/this drivetrain, a 2bbl. 360/904/2.76. The lean burn was fired and hired was a MSD 6A box connected to a JY truck distributor. I also replaced the 2bbl. For a Fed/Mougal 625 AFB on top of a ‘79/4bbl. intake. A ‘72 (?) trap door air cleaner up ropnthe carb. I did a dual exhaust off of the exhaust manifolds @ 2-1/4. At the time, Johnny Law said I needed a cat. I used twin hi flow cats and then a H pipe. Mufflers were Sonic Turbos. 26 inch tires on all 4 corners.

Averaged 18/19. Best mileage was 20 mpg’s with this islands crap gas. Mileage improved once I made it into New Jersey.m
More mileage was possible but unfortunately I never got there. Better distributor timing curve would have helped. I believe a TQ would have been better up top.

The car had power everything, A/C, buckets/center console.

If you're not going crazy, here are original specs.(duration is not @.050) for 1968. Lift-.373" intake, .399" exh. Intake duration- 240*,exh. 248*...Lift numbers are at the valve.

Thank you OB.. Engine is out and torn down to short block. Just came in from the shop after taking the ridge out of each cylinder. I may call a cam grinder with the specs you gave, and see what their recommendation might be......Happy New Year !!!..........MO
