Trying to put a longstanding question to rest. Joined the forums a week or so ago to aid in my 69' Charger rebuild. Trying to find out the status or whereabouts of a 1971 Roadrunner I owned for a few years in the late 90's.
Stationed at NAS Lemoore, California, I was given short-notice orders to report to Beaufort, S.C. for deployment to Kosovo. Had to put the car in outdoor storage. Paid the storage folks for an up front years worth of time on their lot. Provided all contact info, addresses, phone numbers where I could be reached. Headed off overseas content that the Roadrunner would be secure.
Received a letter (conveniently) 8 months later indicating that the storage folks had:
1. raised their prices....
2. attempted to contact me numerous times without success.....
3. my years worth of payment had no longer covered the car......
4. and they had sold it for the balance owed ($200)
So.......you can see how this played out. They managed to get a letter to me "after the fact" and of course hid behind the legalities of their storage contract allowing them to sell off goods as they saw fit in exchange for back fees owed. I suspect a local fellow who was chums with the storage lot folks said "I sure would love to take that car off your hands".... and the storage folks made it happen. Can I prove it? No sir, I cannot.
Anyway, I do not have the VIN. Car was Citron Yella original paint that was pretty old and shabby looking, the top was painted pisscan paint flat black with a little bit of a Starsky and Hutch forward arrow/point that came forward onto the top of the door from the rear trunk deck, and the motor was not in the car. The car would have moved off the lot in 1999-2000. I am assuming it would have been seen/worked on in the Hanford/Visalia/Fresno area shortly thereafter.
I have no legal claim to the car, so I'm not looking to start any brawls or anything....I'd just like to know the car wasn't crushed or some other such nonsense.

If you had a contract for a year's storage for a certain price it is just that- a contract.

...and paid in full.

Sue the storage lot after filing a police report.

Wait, this happened when?

Not sure what the statute of limitations on grand theft are...

There are now very specific laws in most states regarding storage units and members of the armed forces to stop this very thing.

My rental agreement contains a specific question as to whether the tenant is a member of any branch or reserve unit and specifically asks for the unit number and CO name and contact info.

Even having that opportunity do decline to give the info, the tenant still has additional rights if they are in fact an armed forces member and are deployed, causing them to leave the area.

Do you know any of the cars history before you owned it?
History that I do have....it was a 383 4 bbl car, Citron Yella original paint, black vinyl top, used as a "security vehicle" for cruising parking lots and businesses in the Visalia Ca area. Engine was .060 overbore after 2 rebuilds, at which point it was sold by the Security Company to a private owner.
The private owner was a nefarious type who got himself in trouble with his girlfriend, the law, just about anyone he knew, and he was sent off to prison. His girlfriend had POA and was selling off all his stuff, at which point I found the car advertised in the local Thrifty Nickel.
The only thing I did to the car was:
get it running
get it to pass smog
register it
remove the vinyl top which was holding water and creating rust issues on the exterior roof.
Besides that the car was completely intact, very little rust, good interior/headliner/auto transmission.

...again, if you paid for a year of storage at an agreed upon price, you were paid in full for one year.

Research the statute of limitations on grand theft in your state.
That info should be available online.
