The 73 I recently picked up had all new brakes on the rear at some time in the past. Too bad they didn't replace the leaking axle seals when they put brakes on it. The shoes were soaked in gear lube. Cleaned up all the hardware, and have a pair of axle seals coming from Summit racing with a new set of Summit house brand brake shoes and Lucas gear oil.

I hope the Summit brand shoes are decent quality. Starting to wonder if I should have gotten a brand name shoe?

I popped out the old seals, there is no shoulder to set the seal against. How do I determine how deep to set them?

I have Lucas 80w90 gear oil coming. It says that additional friction modifier is not needed. Is that true?

There is a shoulder for the seal....look closer. Gear lube....depends. IF you have limited-slip (posi rear end), then you don't need to add anything. If you DO have limited-slip, then you either have to add a bottle of Ford posi additive OR use gear lube that already contains the additive.

My 8 3/4 had no shoulder suitable for seal placement. The factory had a tool for this purpose. I installed the seal on the axle shaft and measured to the bearing retainer to determine the depth. Make sure it is installed square to the bore.

OK, I will do the same to find the distance to seat the axle seal. Maybe even try to set it deeper, or more shallow to avoid the wear mark already on the axle shaft.
I am going to the hardware store and try to find a PVC pipe or fitting that is close to diameter of the axle tube. It should have the end perfectly square I hope. Use that to set the seal square as I can.

The shoes you are getting ARE garbage ---- because
anything and ANY brand of new manufacture had to be garbage -- thanks to our EPA and the rules and regulations......
The only QUALITY is N.O.S. ++ Asbestos ++ and
fortunately for you, I purposely hunt it down and have it for you......
