Charger fuel tank replacement

Need to replace the fuel tank in my 69 charger, and probably replace the line to the front. First off is there anything odd or tough about this? Any advice from someone who has replaced there's will be appreciated.
Second part it appears many places sell the tanks and seems like different brands . Don't know if there are any difference in them? Any recommendations good or bad?

To my knowlege lots of places sell them.. but they're all Spectra...
 
Curious about this too, so I'm subscribing. I'd thought of going stainless so it doesn't start to rust. Seems to me I was pricing them out at the Nationals in Ohio and Vans Auto had the stainless parts for a pretty reasonable price.

Edit,... Just looked and they have them for $210, but are out of stock.
 
Just do everything stainless and be done with it......I am an OE guy and the last thing I wanted to deal with was a natural steel line rusting and that usually happens where you can't get to that.....

I was fortunate and the original lines were in good shape. It took a fair amount of work to take the new lines and get them to match the originals.....but it made life easy.....

Spend a week and read through the restoration threads here. You'll learn EVERYTHING that you need to know to replace a tank, lines and an entire car! :thumbsup:
 
Last year, Quanta Products was offering deep discounts Sunday at Carlisle. Hard to wait till July though.
 
If originality is a priority, go with the Spectra tank. Pricing can be all over the board, but check on Amazon as AMD will sometimes have them at a very good price. I would strongly suggest staying away from the budget tanks. They are painted and I have heard of them rusting out within two to three years of installation. The Spectra tanks are galvanized and are OE replacement quality. They can be easily cleared or painted to preserve the exterior finish and the galvanized inner coating reduces the chances of corrosion.

The stainless tanks offer a finish that will last for years and other than the shiny exterior, are correct in shape and fit. I am not sure of an issue with the stainless tanks, but the Spectra tank lock ring is not quite as thick as the original lock ring. You can find various post on this issue. Either reuse your original or purchase a lock ring of the correct thickness.

The other item to replace is the fuel filler neck grommet. Buy from a reputable vendor who moves a good amount of volume. Years ago, some reproductions which are still out there was made of a material which fuel would soften and thus develop a leak. For the Charger applications, hopefully you can reuse your original fuel filler tube to trunk floor seal. The reproductions are far from being correct, so try to reuse the originals.

One other thing to order with your tank is fuel tank studs and nuts. The original studs used a tall nut with a nylon pellet which was used to prevent the nut from working loose. Make sure and spray these for a couple of days prior to removing the tank so that the nuts are easier to remove. Reproduction studs and nuts are available as well and like everything else, price is all over the spectrum, just shop around to know what your actually purchasing.

Fuel lines are available from a variety of vendors and in both original style metal or stainless. Can you reuse your originals? If they are still in good shape, simply clean and reuse. Reproductions are about like many reproduction parts, one set from the same vendor will be perfect and the next set will have issues. But do replace the rubber lines with a good quality hose and clamps.

That gives you a basic review of the required parts other than the sending unit which will yield pages of information on them. But the fuel tank replacement can easily be done in your drive way in an afternoon with really no special tools.
