After years of driving my Charger with an automatic transmission, I am considering a major change.....to a MANUAL transmission! I'm not totally convinced yet, I am just chewing on the idea right now.
As is the case so often, I get curious about stuff AFTER the stores close. I can't simply call to get pricing right now.
Who knows the current pricing on the popular 5 speed transmission conversions? I am interested in whatever kit is the most complete, though it wouldn't be a big deal to have the drive shaft made locally.
Thanks.

I checked the Summit website. They do show a kit from American Powertrain but their text is a bit unclear....$4600 but with no bellhousing, clutch, flywheel or pressure plate. No pistol grip shift lever or drive shaft.
I emailed Silver Sport to get a quote from them.

It's going to be pricey Kern Dog! Even the 4spd-to-3spd w/OD from Passon is out of my price range.....and I'm starting with all the 4spd stuff. Have you considered a gearvendor unit? Are you just wanting a stick shift OR looking for overdrive OR both?

I guess the other question is what horsepower are you making & how do you drive the car? If it's "just a cruiser" you may be be just fine with one of those aluminum case "feather Duster" transmissions.

I had one of those factory 833 overdrives in my 74 Duster. (71 340 clone) NO thanks! The rpm drop from 1st to 2nd sucks !
I did have a Gear Vendors and the experience was not optimal. It was an early unit. The electronics were not reliable. There was no mount to attach the floor shifter bracket so a modified bracket had to be made. The drive shaft had to be custom made since the GV had a bolt on yoke. New units are surely better.
The engine is a 440/493. It dyno'd at 410 HP to the wheels. I do like to smoke the tires and hang the tail end out sometimes so the car is not just a cruiser. I might be interested in the manual trans swap as a novelty...I might change my mind later. For now, the idea of a big change like this reinvigorates my interest in the car.

Whats wrong with a regular 4-sp and maybe a 2:76 rear gear or something closer to 3:00, how freakin fast do you need to go. Power band would still be great.

I already have direct drive. The appeal of any overdrive setup is having both rapid acceleration from a dead stop and better top end, lower freeway RPMs, etc. The manual transmissions I read about all have a deeper first gear than my 727 and also at least a .82 overdrive. That is tempting.
Most factory setups had a 3.23 gear or numerically lower with a manual trans. I can almost smell the clutch just thinking about a 2.76 axle with a 4 speed !

Silver Sport TKO $3490 with upgrade ready to ship.
Passon A855 $5475 waiting list.
Derwud put SST TKO in, Charger was automatic car.

I just did a complete conversion from a 727 to an 833 (18 spline) on my coronet.
I have roughly 6500 in the job.
Add 3000 for the Passon 855.

I did 100% of the work myself, so that cost is in parts.

You have to remember that along with the obvious stuff, you’ll have carpet, steering column (mine was a column auto) brackets, levers, grommets, some wiring, etc.....

To be fair, in my 6500, I had a pair of TTI headers and a Robbmac starter.

Where was a Passon 855 found for 3k?

Did you end up finding a nice used steering column, or buy aftermarket of some type? I just did the 4-speed conversion also and am having a hard time finding a 68 or 69 manual steering floor shift column.

Don't forget trans tunnel mods if going with other than an 833 based unit...

Brewers sells complete kits for 833 conversions.

I used a repop collar and converted my auto column.
The collar was about 130 bucks or so.

4 speed columns for sale.

Checked with Tony recently and he has none. I know about the collar adapters, but really want the correct longer tube coning into the engine compartment.

Yes, still working on it.. I hope it will be one of the best mods I do.. But please don't ask me to relive the payment pain.. Kidding, I will have to dig it up.. Considering the price of a Rebuild of the auto and gear vendors and all the other OD options, it was CHEAP!

If you don't mind the fab work this ^^^^ is the *******! I've got a few years on my T56 now and absolutely love it. I can run freeway speeds at 2,000 rpm with 4:30 gears, I'm currently running 3:91's and cruise 80mph at 1,800 rpm getting around 19 mpg with a 456 stroker. The gearing 1st-4th is very nice with 5th being perfect for 55-70 mph and 6th being great for 70mph on up. The gearing on the TKO's are also great but they're multi rail shifted whereas the T56 is a single rail shifter... smoother shifting.

I have a thread buried somewhere (viper T56 install) that shows all of the parts and prices for a do it yourself approach. Thinking I had $3,000 in it?

This is one of those rare instances where I absolutely hate Mopar....it just plain sucks that there is so much money/work/modification needed just to get an OD gear. Oh well..good luck Greg I hope you can do it!
