Would sure like not to fork over $2500 and wait two months for either of the big transmission names...
anyone? Ferris?

I'm going to go to overdrive, and probably sell my 18 spline trans, it has long shaft with duel bolt patterns, will need 4th gear synco I'll take 1800. As is or 2200. Freshend up. Thanks Joe

You can eliminate the guy in Ohio from your list of two unless you want to buy a complete “kit”.
I tried to buy a rebuilt 18spline 833 last winter and was told no.
Was told either I buy everything from him or no trans for me.
Ended up in PA at Jamie’s place and I’m glad it worked out that way.

Thanks. You may or may not recall the story of my last attempt at getting a rebuilt unit.
Wound up fetching one from he who you recommend. Wound up being a trainwreck.
Just a sloppily built unit that was bad right out of the crate.
To his credit, he refunded me and took it back and we didn't try again; I didn't have the time,
since I had a man's lift tied up while waiting.
Overall, I just got the impression the dude is severely covered up and stuff like that happens
when one is simply too busy. Also probably explains the gruff demeanor, too.

Dan has never outright told me "no", just that it's about a 2 month window from time of order.
I've done business with them several times and he's been exemplary on the phone when I had questions.
He's spent a ton of time with me in that regard and is always pleasant.

Either way, we're talking a not inconsiderable amount of money here and both are severely overworked,
yet to their credit neither lets anyone else do the work for them.
I just need a good working used unit. It doesn't have to be concourse or pretty, just in good functional
shape.

For anyone keeping score at home, currently Passon wants $2400 and Brewer's $2500.
That's totally rebuilt with their exemplary warranties.
Both are VERY backlogged, too.

+1 845-742-0571 drive line works .
Give this guy a call he might have one ready to go on the shelf ,if not he is very backed up with work and might be awhile.

Last year I called Jamie and ordered my trans. Drove up and picked it up two weeks later.
That was last February.
Brewer outright told me he would not sell me an 18 spline trans alone. He said he was getting short on cores and was only selling complete swap kits.

I have rebuild several 883s and truck overdrives, parts aren't that expenses, don't let the gurus scare you into a high price rebuild, any one with mechanical ability can do this, I can even teach you to get it apart without a press.

The above is true these are easy to rebuild be careful if you go this way make sure you don't get a (slick shift ?) Is that what they call it ? Basically there butchered trans'
I've rebuilt a few 3 speeds out of older cars very easy !
Good luck

One trick is to cut a counter shaft down just so it will fit inside the trans, use this to load your roller bearings, install in place and push the useable counter shaft thought. This keeps the bearings in place

Elite driveline parts in Florida that BB70 just mentioned. A friend of mine bought one of their 18 spline units last year and it has been great. 10k miles and zero trouble. Here’s a linky Ed. https://www.ebay.com/itm/MOPAR-66-7...637751?hash=item4d3b0494b7:g:GNwAAOSw65FXv6JQ
Thanks much fellas! Yep, I see their stuff on eBay and it sounds fine. Killer: "SORRY NO PAYPAL". Ouch.
Oh well, other means can be arranged, I suppose. I just didn't know anything about them, so now I do!
We'll put them on the speed dial with the other two if it comes down to me spending a friggin fortune.
Thanks again!

I don't know a dang thing about them, honestly. One part of cars I just never got into at all.
I always wondered how hard (as in $$$) it would be to "convert" a 23 spline into an 18 - or even if it's possible.
I know the input shaft alone is like $400, though...

Ironically, I was given a reminder of the relative urgency this subject is to me today.
Took the GTX out for a little drive since the weather was so nice - and the dang Hurst about came off in my hand.
I managed to get her home and up in the air to have a look. Shifter about fell off!
Seems Mr. Mechanic that last swapped transmissions for me (when the "new" Passon unit took a shiyat on me) didn't
get the shifter adapter plate on very securely. The bottom bolt was tee-totally gone and the others were on the way -
and I haven't driven the car more than a couple hundred miles since that day in his shop.
I wound up rigging a regular bolt with some small washers to fit the tapered recess, only to find out the threads in
the tranny case got buggered when the bolt worked its' way out.
:mad::mad:
Improvisation time. I have it back together now and functioning, but there won't be any bang shifting going on any
time soon.
Seals it for me. Nobody else lays a wrench on this car but me from here on.

When I bought my brand new hurst shifter (competition plus) it came with grade 5 mounting hardware.
Additionally, the 7/16 bolt (main attachment) only treaded into the trans about 1/4”.
I threw those in the trash and sourced some grade 8 bolts in a longer length to get some depth.
Goes along the time tested constant that if it comes in a box “ready to bolt on” you damn well better check it over!
