help! no oil pressure

it looked a little scored when I took oil pump apart. it does turn when I held it in my hand and used the int shaft to turn it.either way now that its off I will replace pump and go from there .will update in the future

strange that it happened right after
you stated a couple hard breaking stops (IIRC)

most all the previous recommended checks
'are viable'
my 1st suspect after that, was the pressure spring
on the side of the pump faulty/broken
or the pump (drive) shaft
or something in the oil pan (like sludge/grime etc.)
strange stuff happens sometimes, especially if it's never been off
you did service on the heads previously something got down there (?)
something in the pan "possibly" slid forward & clogged the pick up
or the pick up fell-off/broke (not as likely)

I'd pull the valve cover too, it can't hurt
check it out, it may just be a coincidence
it happened right after the hard breaking
bad lifter, bent pushrod, faulty or even broken rocker/s,
plug on the end of the rocker shaft came out
or rotted out etc. (not as likely)

loosing all the oil pressure,
sounds like an oil pump failure or something seriously clogged
(like the oil pressure sending unit too, as far as the gauge goes)
especially with the accompanied lifter/clacking noises you described
&/or clogged oil-filter bypass
check the easiest & most logical 1st
do an oil change & filter change,
look & see if it's got a lot of metallic in the oil
unfortunately it could be something far worse
(sorry; not trying to be a negative Nancy)

good luck

Bent a pushrod and a lifter popped out...By "hit the pedal pretty hard" I'm taking that to mean the accelerator pedal, not the brake.

If nothing has been done to the engine all these years, I'd pull the valve covers and check the valve train as suggested. Also check for valve seals. They dry rot, break apart and they get into the pan, clogging up the oil pickup.

I will install new oil pump next week. I was thinking maybe pickup in oil pan maybe clogged.if I have no pressure after I install pump and use primer tool I will take valve cover off.i am trying to eliminate component one by one so I don't end up with half engine apart. I will update next week thanks

Expect the primer can take a little while to fill an empty filter (less time if pre-filled) and build pressure. You'll feel it drag the drill down. You might want to attach a known good mechanical oil pressure gauge to the plugged send port.
After 36 years, brittle umbrella seal bits and gasket material may very well be part of the cause. Do you know what type of cam timing gear is in it? What has come out of the oil pan drain with the oil?

I also bet a lifter popped out seen it!!

oil looked good when drained. just ordered new oil pump . hope to install next weekend.if no pressure I will remove oil pan and see if there are any surprises. I wonder if pickup in oil pan got clogged somehow

Check for debris in the pan. Broken pieces of valve seals can cause the pickup to clog if they slide during a hard braking.

update- installed new oil pump yesterday. primed engine first and oil came up real quick. put distributor in and started car. plenty oil pressure and no more engine noise.i guess some how old oil pump went bad.thanks

Did you take the pump apart to see what was going on inside?

yes, I didn't see anything wrong.it was still spinning if I manually turned it.i am going to drop oil pan down the road since its never been off. there might be a lot of sludge that maybe clogged pickup.either way for now I have probably a little more pressure at idle and no engine noise.thanks

I took it apart today and just saw a spring which was fine.thanks
There's piston/relief valve did that come out or was it stuck? If it stuck in the relief pressure position no or low oil pressure. Someone correct if I'm wrong.

if we are talking about the spring.yes it came out easy in one piece.thanks

The spring pushes the relief plunger valve did that come out? See pic ,could have stuck open?
