In 1970 if the spare tire rim was painted body color, would it be painted on both sides or would only the outside facing side got body color??

Steel wheels where coated with a black primer......Body color was applied to the faces and there will be over spray through the openings to the back side an outer rim inside...

If the car came with W23 road wheels, would the spare rim most likely be black??

The road wheels were full silver......They were painted prior to delivery to the factory from the vendor....

I think we talked about this a week or two ago & came to the conclusion that all spares were black painted steel, regardless of what type of rally wheel or painted rim came on the car?

Thanks.......after looking through a bunch of trunk pictures online I think the black is correct.

I have pictures showing the opposite......it is a plant variation.....and has yet to be clarified.....

The one clear agreement was they were all painted black prior to color paint........

Mine had the road wheels like this. Broadcast sheet shows W2-3.

No kidding? So, if I understand correctly, then are you saying:
a. Steel rims --> could get black OR body color spare
b. 14" rally rims --> black steel spare
c. 15" rally rims --> black steel spare

Is that it or am I not understanding? If a is correct, do you have any idea yet which plants gave you a painted spare with steel wheels? St.Louis plant?

I believe that Mopars of the 60s came with black painted wheels if they had full wheel covers. The "poverty cap" cars had wheels painted body color. I dont have documentation, but my memories of the cars from when I was young.....Any body else?

Never seen but a black spare or non hubcapped wheel.
Got some factory pictures or build sheet to support the body color theory?

This is the spare from a 70 Belvedere that had body color steelies and dog dishes.... the car was very unmolested.

Thats what I am referring to.....The "dog dishes".....Full wheel covers were all black.....Honeycombs were all silver....

Bill, thanks for posting that.......That is exactly how all steelies with dog dishes I have had through the years and were painted like that on all 5 rims.....I have had 3 complete originals cars like that. Two from Lynch Road and one from Ham......

I am sure once in a blue moon there was a line error and a spare was slapped together and thrown in the trunk without body color.....That does not mean it was the norm.....

This is a portion of the original BS from my 36k 69 charger RT built at the HAM plant coded for 14" steelies and dog dishes....The one picture I found of that spare rim was not good quality....Being a X9 black car its hard to take a pic of the black on black....If you still want to see it I can post it up...

I have never seen painted rims with a black spare in trunk....All I have had or ran across were painted......

Magnums I have seen black spares.......

I only am referring to correct and survivors I personally have seen....Not restored reductions of memories or what someone thought it should have.....

Another data point:
My XP29N0G car built in St. Louis has the W23 wheels shown in your post along with the optional trim ring. My matching broadcast sheet shows W23. The spare wheel is black all over and is shod with the T87 code F70-14 inch Polyglas rwl tire that matched the other four tires. The car has the monster drum brakes, not the disc set-up.

When it comes to the magnums......road wheels etc....There is no reason why the factory would paint the spare body color......unless it was some line worker mistake.....

Would love to see more of that 500 btw....
