Can anyone help with instructions on adjusting the shift pattern on the transmission? My car is a 318 automatic. It is built a bit and has a 4barrel carb but the linkage set up is original. Problem is that the shift from 1st to 2nd is at about 8-10mph. It’s my understanding that I need to lengthen the intermediate shift rod a little. Do I have to remove it to do so? Sorry if this is a stupid question and thanks in advance for any insight...

Lengthen the kick down rod no more than 3/16" at a time. Test drive between adjustments. Depending on the style rod you have, you might need to remove it from the carb to turn it out.

KK is correct, but you won’t be able to get a lot of difference in mph as you would think.

More gas, it won't shift as fast!

Column or console shift ? Was it apart ? This covers all engines. Might help others also.

Column shift. I’m sure it’s been apart as I had the motor built about 8 years ago. Had the original 318 rebuilt, removed 2 barrel and had 4 barrel Edelbrock/intake installed. I will take a pic and post the setup in case anyone may have input from a visual.. thanks for the responses guys!!

When I put the 4 BBL on my van 360, I finally put a bolt part way in the linage slot to get full travel on the throttle pressure lever. Trial & error adjustment.

The back of the kickdown linkage slot should be almost touching the linkage pin. (if you catch my drift)
The first photo is what it is NOT supposed to look like. The second one is correct. Start there and fine tune as needed.

Thanks for the download.. I have a manual that has that info now that I think about it. I had it in the shop for disc brake conversion and asked them to adjust the shift pattern.. on the drive home after every stop the shift moved up.. at one time it was as high as 25mph! I thought it was awesome until I had no 3rd gear. Then I investigated.. dummies forgot to put the return spring back on! Now back to 8mph 1st to 2nd.. haha

Did you get new linkage for the 4 barrel ? The 2 bbl carb on the 318 sits further back than the primaries on the 4 bbl. 2BBl linkage is too short on the kickdown rod and too low on the intake manifold to line up properly.

I’ll have to check into that.. I really don’t know since I had motor done prior to bodywork 8 years ago..

I am also having a couple shift problems with my 727. This is behind a 440 6bbl in my 69RR. I have the kickdown linkage adjusted as shown, barely touching the linkage pin. The trans will shift from 1st to 2nd almost immediately after moving and into 3rd shortly after that, still at very low speed. It's not too much of an issue with 410 gears and 600lb ft of torque :), but I would like to get it right. Also, I can shift from D down to 2 on the column shifter, but cannot shift any further than that. Park, R, N, and D work fine.
