so, lets say a guy was considering selling his 440 in favor of a 3g Hemi swap or something...

Whats a fair asking price to sell a 440? In this particular case, a 76+ block, with unknown specifics beyond a purple shaft cam, eddy RPM airgap intake, and otherwise solid-seeming motor.

Its not for sale, I’m only wondering what it might fetch if it was.

Clearly I recognize that it’s not the unicorn of motors, and would be much more valuable if it was say a ‘68 casting true orignal a12 motor or something... just curious

FYI, I sold a 77 440 short block stock crank, rods, pistons for $300 and everybody told me that was way too cheap.
Factor in the cost of heads, intake, cam and related block hardware along with valve covers and oil pan. Also everything else that won't be used for the g3 swap like exhaust manifolds etc. Add it all up. Ball park figure of $1000 to $1200 that's what I see them selling for on Craig's List round here.

I'm assuming running? I've seem them sell for anywhere from 1000 to 3000 depending on who, what when and where. Up here in Indiana where 440s are somewhat rarer, just a bare 440 block will run you 500, 1000 for a non-running core, way more with a more desirable year or HP block. My buddy at the Indy swap meet last year had 2 440s, a 78 and I think the other was a 74, long blocks that were professionally rebuilt, just needed the upper assemblies and they literally sold as fast as we unloaded them from the trailer. I forget exactly what he got, but it was over 2k each.

Its a strong running motor, good oil pressure... I feel like its had internal work done to it just because (if I’m correct?) the late model blocks were low compression, but this thing certainly isn’t. I just can’t say what the bore/stroke/compression is, or whether the pistons/valves are original, or whether any millwork has been done, as I’ve not pulled any of it apart to see, and the PO was less than fully knowledgeable about it.

get you a 12 dollar bore scope for your cell phone, pull a spark plug and see if the piston looks different that stock, stock would be essentially a flat top. "MOST" common pistons used to bump compression have valve reliefs. Some dont but its a cheap way to find out. If you get a long enough bore scope, you could actually run it up through your oil pan and check the bottom of the pistons for part numbers. have to have a lighted one and it takes practice and time. I've only done it once on a 360 I was looking at buying that was in a car and the owner wasnt willing to let me pull heads on.

I sold a gone through 440 (68 block) 906 iron heads, stock internals, purple cam, less carb for $3700 here in Indiana.

Bare block 440. 1974. Virgin. $400.

Seems strange. I've got a 440 block that was recently rough bored to .025 over and just needs the final hone to be .030 over. It was given to me by my engine guy because he was cleaning out some area in his shop. I offered it to someone on here for free, since it was free to me, and I can't even get him to respond.

Also have a free 383 long block and reasonably priced 383 and 400 motors that are complete from oil pan to intake.

The fun of geographical parts location, ha. If Texas wasn’t so far from Indiana, I’d take you up on free motors. But shipping sounds painful.

Agreed. The guy who said he wanted it was here in Indiana

I had a 77 400-2 bone stock from a van with 90,000 miles.

Ran like a scalded dog (that's fast).

Your engine will be worth 50-100% more if a potential buyer can "hear it run" in the car.

I'm in Indiana, I'd be open to the 383 block or even a 400 complete depending on price.

You still have the 440 for free?

Sorry, but it doesn't look like it. Two of our members on here PM'd me asking about them. They plan to come get them this weekend. If either of them fall through, I can let you know though.
