I am working on a deal for some parts I have. Simple question:

Do original center caps for the rallye wheels carry more value than the repops?

Thanks,
Ivan

I have seen the repops from classic industries on two cars start peeling pretty close to being new. The argent textured paint peeled right off. They never sand the surface after chroming and it comes right off the chrome and won't stick.

mine are original...heavy and look like potmetal...dark centers...so if used repops sold for $100. Just wondering what value I should add to originals?

If they are nice I'd say they are worth more than repops or sure. I always say, they are worth what someone will pay for them. Not sure what the market is on those center caps, but gotta be worth more than cheap repop junk.

OEM chrome is "always" better than repro.

Since the originals are pot metal, any pitting discounts the price.

Unless the parts are NOS or mint used, the valve that the market seems to give is only the price of repros or slightly less.

I will preffer any original piece with an easy refurbished servicing than a new repro. Talking about caps I got an used set of caps what the seller called REFURBISHED.... yeah, right, he just painted them but pitting was present. FORTUNATELLY pits were just on painted areas, so removed those pits with a dremmel bit, filled the areas with bondo and painted them... they look great now. Paid around $100 for the set.

you tell me... T handle Knob chrome ( and bezel ) began to dissapear after 3 or 4 months. They are nice on non driver cars but sucks being a driver. Removed the chromed parts from my cracked my T handle and installed them on new repro handle.

Did you get the repro handle with the "improved, reinforced" base?

you mean the Fatty bottom area ? yes... But I think that's more related to a correct shifter indicator reading ( more precission to the indicator plate ) than a reinforcement itself ?¿?¿?¿?¿?¿?¿

It never ceases to amaze me, that someone will invest time, effort and money to reproduce a part that is inferior in one way or another. Why bother ?

The original T handles were prone to cracking at the base.
IIRC that also causes the screw/bolt that hold it to the mechanism to become detached.

I remember about 8 out of 10 that I used to see had electrical tape at the bottom.

One of the repros is supposed to be re-engineered to help fix that.
I've not seen one though.

Yes I know they are prone to crack there but still I think the real purpouse of that mod is the one I mentioned. I think have seen NOS later replacement pieces on ebay with that fat bottom end.

Replacement T handles are really great pieces with just 2 cons... the poor chrome quality and absence of the spring load on button assembly. Still with that is hard to tell they are repros even side to side to an original.

Sorry the highjack... but since has being mentioned. NOS with the fatty bottom end.

You know it's NOS due the retracted button. The spring inside makes that. Repro don't get the spring so the button keeps out. You can dissasembly it and install the spring from your old one. Even if your full buttom assembly and ring bezel is still with nice chrome, you can install them on the new repro piece ( BTDT )

71's were straight 72-4 had the hump in the bottom for strength. They were not some aftermarket thought they were redesigned by Chrysler to address the flaw of cracking in the next model year. Here is an NOS 71 handle with the original receipt.. And a NOS 72-4 handle with the reinforced hump...

...and late 74's got 70 style.
