Bigger is Better/Size Matters?

Preface: No offense to 440 owners, I planned a 440 build myself one time. I had purchased a set of Stage III cylinder heads after placing a wanted ad in "Hot Rod" magazine. They were purchased along with the factory cross ram and shipped to California from the Carolinas. I actually gave those pieces away (free) after having had them in storage for about 25 years. Was going to stuff the 440 in a '64 Barracuda in order to see how fast a bracket car I could build at home.

My "beef": I find it more and more difficult/rare to see an originally equipped 383 BBody that has not been changed over to a 440 (or larger). I'm not looking for one, just an observation that I never can get over. I wonder what everyone has in mind when they decide to do that?

And for some reason it really bugs me seeing 440 callouts on the hood and the fender on the same car. Please stop that, I get the idea--I don't need to see 440 plastered all over the vehicle. I know I'm preaching to the choir when it comes to that, FBBO forum members know better, don't they?

I like my 383, it's a screamer ! Doesn't have the low end grunt my old 440 had but it pulls very hard after say 2500 ish ... I was planning a 440 build but let a good buddy of mine talk me into a 383, I have zero regrets !

Both are great engines with different characteristics. 440 got bigger balls down low and the 383 is more the screamer. The old adage no replacement for displacement was and still is true until you introduce forced induction into the mix. Incredible what todays engineers have accomplished with small displacement engines. Computer management/EFI has taken hot rodding to the next level for sure. Too bad you didn't get to build that big block Barracuda, woulda been a bracket beater....
 
My 528" Hemi in my Challenger still says only 426 Hemi on the shaker scoop. Is that not okay?

I always thought seeming it's your car you can do what you want with it. I mean, it's not as if a 383 car is so rare that you would feel bad about changing it, maybe a 383 A body.
 
My car was originally a 383 SE car, but had a 440 in it when I originally bought it years ago. The original motor was long gone at that point. I rebuilt a 440 for it because that was what was in it when I drove it back in the day. Nothing wrong with a 383. I had a buddy back then that had a '69 Superbee with 383 and 4spd. Quick car!!

Personally,... I prefer to keep secret what's in there and don't like calling out the engine. My Barracuda has a decent 400 build in it, but I'm still running the 383 air cleaner pie tin.
