I have the opportunity to pick up a mopar 489 case 323 gears suregrip third member. I’m not sure what a fair price would be, he’s advertising it that it’s in good working condition. Wants $350.00

Thats a fair price. A rebuilt unit is over 600. But you have to take their word that it is in good shape.

350 and guaranteed to be good id throw my cash at him. But without a guarantee you need to inspect it thoroughly.

He says it came out of his 72 charger. In the past I’ve always made sure the gears looked good and that it turned ok. Anything else I should be looking at? It’s been awhile since I bought or replaced one.

Can you find out if its a cone style or clutch style.. Clutch style can be rebuilt. I think you have limitations on rebuilding cone style sure grips.

The markings on the case are 2881489, I believe that identify that it is from 1969 to 1973 (I believe).

Buy it!

That is a steal if it is in good working condition. Those 489 units are getting harder to come by.

sure grip unit will work in any case style.

they just came from the factory as cone styles after a certain year.

it's the ring and pinion that are case specific.

For $350 ?
it had better already be in your possession, if not ? get off the Computer and RUN over there !

Well, not necessarily. This large stem came out of a 489 case. A tapered pinion set went back in...…….

Thanks for all the feedback, I picked it up this morning. The seller is a mopar guy with a couple nice cars. Got a great deal and made a new friend. It’s been a good day. (He also has a 440 block he’s thinking of getting rid of).

489 is a cone style
Well, yeah...when original they are. I've seen several 489 cases with a clutch type diff. I own 2 of them.
I would NOT use a cone diff unless I had it tested. An axle and gear guy I deal with tests them for holding strength....When new they hold over 100 ft lbs. One I brought in only went to 40 lbs ! It looked fine from the outside.

There is a quick test to see if they have the resistance or they slip.

It takes 2 people and 2 axles. Insert the axles into the sure grip and one person turn one axle one way while the other person turns the opposite axle the other way. You should pretty much be fighting each other at that point if the unit is in decent shape.

Just a quick "non technical" way of checking one when considering purchasing one.

...or put one end in a vice and the other on a big torque wrench.....
