Borgeson offers a small steering box conversion for 62-72 mopars. Has anyone installed one on a later (73-79) b-body? If so please provide some details

Thanks

Haven't personally done it but don't see why one would not work on a 73-79 car. Chrysler use the same factory box from 62-79 on all a/b/c/e bodies. Somewhere along the way they changed from 1 1/8 sector shaft to 1 1/4 but other than that there should be no reason it won't work. Most likely your car would require the 1 1/4 shaft version of the Borges on box but you should double check before ordering.

62-72 has a smaller sector shaft but their website says you can also get a box with the larger (73+) shaft.

I did a 71 Cuda with the larger sector box. Should be no different in a b body as long as you know what size sector you have. I believe 73 was the year of the larger pitman arm, but measure to be sure.

I put the bigger one in my 69, nice clean install.

70-74 E-body kept the same k-frame and therefore the same suspension geometry. B-body switched to a different front subframe in 73. I don't know if the pitman is longer but the spindles are. Unless you can get one second hand at a big discount, there would be no reason to put a 62-72 box into a 73+ b-body. You KNOW it will fit and you get the thicker shaft as a bonus.

Also don't forget to buy the factory style plunge coupler. If you run a u-style joint your column bearings will wear out prematurely.

Appreciate your taking the time the share your experience. My 74 charger steering unit is worn, I prefer to install a tighter unit for the additional cost.

Plunge coupler even more important on 73+ since worn k-member biscuits can exaggerate chassis flex. 73+ also had a rag joint on the column shaft, could be seeing some play there as well.

don't know if you already installed the steering box, but I purchased one myself, it was a pain in the butt to get the old one out, you have to cut the column at the end to fit, I also replaced the end with a u joint that fit perfectly with the steering box, you are going to need new power steering lines specific to that box. Hopefully all goes well

Thank you ofr your response. Not yet. But I am planning on installing the Borgenson system. What is your opining of the upgrade? Did you replace your k-frame isolators?

In regard to the new hoses I would recommend finding a local shop to make you new ones or change the ends on your existing lines to fit the borgeson box. I ordered the ones they sell that are supposed to fit but after 60 yrs of replacement parts and engine swaps the lines that were on my PS pump did not match up with the borgeson lines so I had to have new ones made anyway.

See what the cost is. having the ends made seems like a good option. The borgeson kit I got from Bergman just went right in. The coupler was helpful. I'm earlier than you, so different kit.
