I need to change the gasket on a Suregrip rearend, do I need to add any sealant or just replace gasket? I see lots of work here (disconnect drive shaft, remove axles etc...) and don't want to have to revisit. Thanks

No gasket. Clean everything really good and just use silicone sealer (RTV)

I would because it is a lot of work. There are silicone sealers that are made for it but I have had better luck with good old Form-A-Gasket #2. IMHO

If everything is CLEAN...two stacked, paper gaskets have never leaked on my stuff.

OE paper gasket and aviation gasket sealer. Old school... because it works!
If I go with gasket and sealer, I'm guessing I need to put sealant on both sides of the gasket? I read that Ultra Grey RTV is a better alternative to aviation sealer or should I go with AS #2. thanks for all the feedback

Bought a reuse-able gasket from drdiff $10. Was putting new pinion seal and adding a suregrip. Ran into a problem getting axles into SG so pulled it apart put in another SG reused gasket gasket, no problem. Only thing I had to retorque 3rd member 3 or 4 times because of gasket crush.

Don’t use a gasket, Permetex RTV in black or gray, leaks are gone.

I used a gasket with Copper Coat spray on both sides. Good so far. I hate silicone with a passion!

Ma stopped useing gaskets on the rear covers in the late 70's and used a black RTV.

I bought my third member from Doctor Diff. He advised me to use Ultra Grey RTV and no gasket. I followed the Dr's advice and have had no leaks.

As a pipefitter in refineries and powerhouses, I saw a lot of success with #2. That stuff works. However, I did not enjoy the work involved when tearing things down and preparing for new gaskets.
Went to black rtv and no gaskets on my diffs as I change them every 10,000 miles, if not sooner. With my IH PowR-Lok diffs, I used the factory additive years ago, but found that routinely changing the fluid keeps them from chattering when going around corners. The black rtv is easy to clean up and and have back together. The steel covers stick like crazy, never a leak.
