My '70 runner came factory with a Holley. It now has an old carter avs. Though I intend to
keep it mostly stock, there's no way I'm going to put a Holley back on it. It seems to me that
a new 650cfm edelbrock avs2 is a good choice. Anyone, in any way, disagree? If so, why?
Also, in buying a new carb., should I get one with an electric choke, or the manual choke version?
 
It will run with just about any carburetor you put on it....even a Quadrajet if you really wanted to. If you're not worried about being "original" or "numbers matching" & the engine is relatively stock, then a 650 edelbrock would be just fine.

I "personally" prefer manual chokes, but that's up to you.
 
What's wrong with the Carter AVS? If your car came with a Holley it's a 383 as the 70 440 came with a AVS.
 
I do agree with you, the only Holleys I like are the 3 in a row. Most inexpensive way out if you have carb problems is rebuild the Carter.
 
Thanks for the input, guys! I think the carter avs that's on it is actually quite o.k., but won't really know, for sure,
until I get the new, stock cam that I just purchased, installed. The car was my first car, I was 16 (42 years ago),
then it became my dad's car, and now it's mine again. My dad put new piston rings in it, along with a really
radical cam which has really ruined it as an enjoyable driver. My goal is to try and get the engine to be very responsive
from idle, like my older brother's '68 GTX was. Man, was that thing hot! I know my 9.5:1 383 isn't going to match
his 10.5:1 440, but I'm hoping to get it close.....I'm hoping that a new avs2 can help to prevent any "stumble"
or flat spots when in drive and accelerating from idle. I'm hoping that electronic ignition will help do the same, also.

I've had them all and will take a Holley style carb anyday, hell I'd run a Quadrajet before I would a Carter but that's just me. The fact that your just going to throw a new carb on to try and fix a stumble has me :realcrazy:, have you even opened the carb up yet?

Sounds sort of backwards to me. My father was always telling me "you just need to leave it alone".
 
Yeah, I wish my dad would have left it alone, for sure. Fortunately, he didn't do too many things to screw it up.
