I'm using the original wiring so looking for some help as I want to get the correct 4001 / 4002.

The high beams were already dead when I got the car. One of the bulbs is a Westinghouse while the other is a GE. I do not believe there are any electrical issues as the glass has a milky like look to them.

The low beams work and they are both Wagner's, but are halogen. I'm pretty sure they're H5006's.

I see 4001's & 4002's on eBay & will be buying some but what has me confused is I hear of different sized flutes. Can someone please post what these 2 different styles look like.

I'm not having my car judged or anything like that but I want the correct bulbs as well as not putting a strain on the electrical system if I ever needed all 4 lights on. I'm also definitely not spending a ton of money on these as well.

Thanks in advance guys!

I think some excellent info on this is in moparnation74's resto thread.

So Anthony created a restoration tool in my thread to aid in finding things....

Once you look at the wide flute the narrow flute is obvious.....you will be hard pressed to find a NOS wide flute 4002 and expect to pay big bucks....4001 are easier to find....

Narrow flutes are easier to find

Thanks guys. Looks like these will work.

So what is the big deal between the halogen and standard bulbs, do they really pull that much more juice? If so, curious, why not just get one of those relay kits I see people talking about on here for the member that sells them?

I’ve had luck putting halogens in every old car I’ve owned. No issues or relay kit needed. I also don’t drive for hours at a time at night either. I posted a link to a Wagner parts book in dadsbee’s build thread the other day that has current draw per part number. Looks like 20 amps with all four on whether a sealed beam or halogen.

Also, try RockAuto for old bulb part numbers. Sometimes they’ll have them.

Old sealed beams will loose the seal just from age. They may not work well or for long when you get them if they’re old stock.

I have never had a problem with NOS sealed beams, that is a myth your talking about......The GTX had its originals headlights from its birth and are still working...Well, until I put the NOS ones on...:D....all of my past and present rides I used originals and none had issues...

Now in regards to the Halogens, I agree...If you plan on driving the car and not concerned about originality versus safety....Go with the Halogens...

I still have my original GE 4001 high beams, but after the restoration I went with Sylvania Halogens all around, I don't drive much at night plus the car has all new wiring so not really worried about huge pull on the electrical system, and I am sure its not that much more anyway. I checked the 4001s today because you got me curious, and they still work and are still pretty bright, I am guessing they were put on sometime in the 80's so not the original assembly line bulbs, at least I don't think they are, don't know how you could even tell.

I am not sure on 80's bulbs but the older bulbs are dated on the backside in ink...

Interesting, so one is 9-5, the other is 3-4, those are the only codes, so I don't know if that's monthy-year, and if so what decade! LOL

In this modern day age of technology a picture would be helpful and easy to do.......

This is what I am referring to on early bulbs...below dated 10/68 h1968 the 80's are different it seems but with no pic, uhh

Like these, here are mine.

I had a dyslexic moment, 3-5 and 9-4, so then you are saying these are 70's era lamps??

Now we're talking, thanks for the pics......

Obviously, they are later bulbs and not pre 70....my guess is 80's.....You gave me something to research and I will get back to you......I have to narrow down when "SAE" was removed from the stamp.....

Good stuff...

Here is one that is a bit more odd, unfortunately the ink is worn, but it has DOT above the date, which looks just like one number 6, but when did they do red ink?

Yep, those are my "new" ones as I wanted matched sets of the same lumens. Pretty sure my OE's where 3 original and one replacement in '79 and all still work.

Thanks guys, learned a lot from all of you! I bought both of these for $28.50 + free shipping.
