Hi guys, looking for some input from anyone that's used Steer and Gear for a new/rebuilt power steering box, and which level of stiffness you have? They list four options: stock(no thanks), then modern, sport, and rally being the stiffest. I'm leaning toward the 'modern' but is it enough of a difference from the one-finger stock feel? If it's only a marginal difference I would just assume go to the sport level. Thanks!

I had the box in my 1964 wagon rebuilt by them back in 2000. I went with the second level which I guess would be what they now call "modern, sport". I was told by them that it would fell like modern rack and pinion feel. The reality is there was just a minor improvement in steering feel. Probably more like what a new period power steering box would have been.

When I had mine done it was level I II or III... I've had lever 3 in for years already with NO ISSUES. nice and precise - go for for it !

I had them rebuild a box for me back around 2005-ish for the wife's '70 Swinger. I started with a firm feel unit out of a Diplomat police car and had them upgrade it to what I think they called "Stage II" at the time. Road feel and steering resistance were greatly improved. Both of us hate that over-assisted feel of the original units so this was a game-changer. Your best bet would be to call them and have a chat.

Thanks for the replies guys..after talking to them again I went for the 'modern' feel. I've got a new pitman arm to put in, besides that all the other front end components are PST pieces with only a couple thousand miles on them. The gear was the last piece of the puzzle and it was sloppy and a little leaky. Once I get it back together it should be gutentight!

Why did you choose them over Firm Feel? Shipping is cheaper to Washington state than to St Louis or wherever S & G is.
You know that Firm Feel is a Mopar only shop too, right? Just curious, not bashing your choice.

I've used them before for service parts and hard-to-find seals etc and they've always been very good to deal with, so I didn't even consider anyone else...Everyone seems very happy with Firm Feel too, it's hard to find a negative review about either company. S&G sent me a pre-paid return shipping label so I could send them my gear up front to avoid the core charge and reimbursement process. The total shipping (for both ways) is $47, which they will charge me when they charge for the complete job. For me to ship my core to them on my own at a later time would have been closer to $80(according to the quote from the pack & ship place nearby) just for the trip from here to there. Also no charge to yank my old pitman arm an stick it in the box when they ship my rebuilt gear back...that's a hassle that's worth a few bucks to not have to deal with too:D I won't know how to act with nice steering!

Thanks for responding. I only ask because it seems that most people on the West coast go with the guys at Firm Feel.
The owner is Dick Ross.
Guys always say stuff like...
Give Dick a call. Dick was great to work with.
Come on, man....DICK ??? Really, who the hell can call themselves that name without knowing what people think? I know I'm not the only immature minded guy that laughs when I think of guys talking about dealing with dick, talking to dick, saying **** like "Dick was a pleasure to do business with", etc...

I called FF on Thursday to get a box. I was told they are 1.5 months out. That is too damn long. Boxes should be done and on the shelf ready to go. So I called S&G and 1 is on the way along with s new pitman arm. Shipping was 39 bucks to me along with a prepaid return label. I got the “modern” feel box. Total cost was 801, but 200 gets refunded when they get the core back. It was a wash cost wise between the two, but a 1.5 months wait, that was the deciding factor.

I have only dealt with Steer and Gear for my A100 steering box - a bus box if you like. Their service and shipping was great & fast...price reasonable and end product most satisfactory. I would recommend them as a reputable supplier. :)

Yeah heh heh...I think the name "Firm Feel" is a double entendre and 'ol Dick is just laughing it up!
A side note to that, my father-in-law's name is Richard, and he's always gone by 'Dick' no matter what anyone says. But, he's 72 years young and a 6'6" 280lb Marine Corps vet with a booming voice that can rattle windows....he enjoys it when the kids try to tease him!

My wife's cousin-in-law is Graham Sole. His father was Arthur Richard Sole........think about that with his initials. :D

In my endless bucket list is a new steering box. Last year I bought a rebuilt police steering box from National Moparts. It is suppose to be a bit more precise than a normal box. I don't notice a difference.

I put a Stage 2 Steer and Gear box in my 70 RR. BIG improvement. I went with them because like 5.7 Hemi, Firm Feel had an almost 2 month lead time.
