Hopefully someone can answer my question. My fender tag has a D72 where the paint code would be and I can`t find any info besides it being a 3:23 rear for a 6 banger which it`s not. The tag has an A31 code for the rear end so I am stumped as to what this is. Any help would be appreciated. 1970 Super Bee currently beige. Thanks

Factory misprint perhaps? DY2 is is Yellow in 70, and DY3 is Cream, also known as Yellow Gold. Or D7L2, missing the L, which would be a deluxe cloth & vinyl bench seat in beige.

I would say the 7 is a typo. There is DY2 for 1970, which is yellow. I would guess light yellow, because of the 2.

A31 should be 3.91 8.75 rear. Can't help with paint :( Maybe it was a typo.
E63: 383 cid 4 barrel V8 H.P. 335hp
D21: 4 Speed Manual Transmission
D72: Exterior Color
H6X: Trim - High, Vinyl Bucket Seats, Black
TX9: Int. Door Frames
309: Build Date: March 09
: Order number

V1X: Full Vinyl Top, Black
A31: High Performance Axle Package w/3.91 Ratio
A48: Dress Up Package
J25: 3 Speed Wipers
M21: Roof drip rail moldings
N96: Fresh Air Hood

R11: Radio Solid State AM (2 Watts)
V6X: Longitudinal Stripes, Black
26: 26in Radiator

I would tend to agree with DY2.

Since the 7 is near the Y on the keyboard, I could see missing the Y and hitting the 7.

Thanks guys. Knew someone would know what it meant. Typo/misprint sounds correct.
So....what color is the car underneath the carpet or inside the trunk? You should be able to tell the original color if you look really close.

Looks to be light yellow as shown. Here is a new twist on this tag.
309 build date is actually 909 which would put it in September. I have been told that the sequence number 202196 would be sometime in March but I have seen some on the SBR that don`t follow this line of thinking. Is the sequence # vs build date always correct?

Ok but there are quite a few in the Super Bee registry that don`t follow this. Digits starting with 1 that were built after or around the same time. Why take the trouble to fake a tag and get the build date wrong unless it is an error which would be 2 on this tag. The sequence # does match the VIN and body stamps. I assume that a 909 build date would be from September 69 vs. September 70. Thanks

And yet....can anyone confirm DY2 was even available on 70 B bodies?

What is the interior code on the tag?

According to paintref, there is no Y2 paint code for a ‘70 B body, just Y1 and Y3. There is a V2 paint code which is Hemi orange.

I'm not saying the car was painted DY2, but just because an option wasn't available on a particular car, does not mean it didn't get it.

I have found references to DY2 yellow for 1970 in a few different places. I`m going to throw this out there not having the knowledge that many of you do, is it possible that this color was special ordered? Hence the 202196 sequence code but a 909 build date? I want to ask if the 909 build date is 1969 or 1970. When were the fender tags actually created and installed?
Thanks guys

DY2 was available on C bodies. Have you found anything that indicates DY2 was available on B bodies? If the paint was special ordered, we’d expect to see 999 as the paint code.

Please.....the 202 VIN indicates a March 1970 build, not September of 1969. What’s on the door sticker?

Uh, didn't the letter/letter number paint codes start with "E", with E being a 1969 color?

I've never seen that format start with a "D".

D would imply a 1968 color, and the paint code format was different.

No.

The first letter simply tells us, in code, the first year of use of the color. So Y2 (69), used in 68, becomes DY2 in 1970. TX9 is from 63(?). A paint code starting with E (EV2) tells us the paint code was first used in model year 1969, F as in FM3 in 1970, GB5 in 71, etc.

Good point on "T".

You always teach me something more than I thought I knew!
