Well Boeing finally did it! They built an airplane that will automatically fly itself right into the ground, no matter how hard the pilots fight it! Sorry, but this is the only place I can find to post my frustration and anger at this apparent boondoggle. In less than 6 months, 2 of the brand new 737 Max jetliners have porpoised up and down right after take off, then as the controllers fought to regain control, the airplane won, and flew itself at a nose down angle right into the ground. In Ethiopa on Sunday, and into the Java sea in the Lions crash recently. No survivors in either one. China and a few other countries have grounded their entire fleet. I say there should be a world wide grounding until they figure out what is going on. Ideas? Opinions? Thanks

What’s freaks us out even more is my wife and I have an international trip coming up. The planes are 737s. But they are 700 and 800 planes. Is that the same as a MAX? Not feeling good about jumping on one of those right now.

Plus - Prayed for the souls of the Ethiopian Air disaster yesterday.

As we automate systems we become increasingly dependent on software, firmware algorithms. We see this in planes, trains, cars medical devices etc.
One bit being set wrong in a 10,000 line piece of code can be fatal in any of these applications. Exercising the hardware with the code to cover every scenario is critical for sokid integration testing. This takes time and money and test engieers and quality stFf are not always funded and scheduled properly in the development plan.
This situation is blaring and I agree the NTSB needs to figure this out fast and until then I agree ground the ships asap and analyze the data to find the root cause!

Isn't a 737 an awfully small plane for an international flight?

We have a trans- USA flight coming up and I bet the plane is larger than a 737 for that, unless we have to fly to Atlanta or Greeneville on one first.

Usually a FL to OH or east coast flight draws a 737 but further West than the Mississippi draws an A300 or similar.

You won't see this because you have me blocked for whatever reason? But the answer is no, they are not the same.

The other 737s never had this problem before the MAX 8 came out. What about the ground proximity warning system? Did that go off before the crash? Would the plane still be in nose lowered attitude when the ground warning sounded??? Will the computer over ride itself?

Our flights are all fairly short duration. 4 hours or less. We’re going to South America. We have 3 flights each way. No one answered the question is the 737 - 800 the same as the 737 MAX??

The 7 and 8 are not quite the same as the MAX. Those have had an impressive safety record, once they got the rudder control problem fixed.

I hope Boeing gets this sorted out quickly. these days there is a fine line between the flight control computers and the pilot's inputs and which overrides which in certain situations. I believe Airbus dealt with this exact issue 2 decades ago, where the computers simply tried to go into "landing mode" when the pilots were trying to take off. On a side note,

I got a chance to spend some time in a 737 simulator last year, it was an awesome experience!

I am thinking they are one and the same, but let me do some checking. OK, looks like the 737 MAX 7, 8 and 9 are replacing the 737-700, 800, and 900. So 2 different models. MAX 8 is different than the 737 800, according to Wiki. They are NOT referring to the same model. Just like a Duster and a Dart sport are similar, but have some differences. Stay off the MAX 7, 8, and 9 for now! Wait till they get it fixed, then wait 1 more year to be sure!

Flown on 737 for 9 hours

Let's wait and see what the investigation reveals.
Right. What we do know for sure is that 2 brand new airplanes, of the same model, have recently crashed just after take off, killing all aboard. Whether it's pilot error, or pilot error coupled with system flaws, the results are the same.

Given the choice between flying on an airplane controlled by a licensed and experienced pilot or an airplane under the control of a software engineer I'll choose the pilot every time!!
